nvlddmkm.sys = BSOD? :(

Okay so I decided to pick up Black and White 2 again since I have nothing better to do with my time but wreak havoc or maybe some good, haven't decided yet.

..anyways

I start the game (patched and up to date) and everything's fine until I hit a new cutscene, then the game freezes up and after a few moments I get my most favorite thing in the world: BSOD ()

Regular text "blah blah blah failed you suck at life uninstall kthxbye" It says the error is caused from nvlddmkm.sys.

I did some google-ing and came back with some kind of incompatibility between vista and nvidia drivers. I'm fully updated to SP1, I have the 177.70 forceware drivers; I've tried it with other drivers but it's still not working. Ive patched the game, tried it overclocking and not, and nothing seems to work.

Anyone with a solution of some kind? Besides the whole "vista sux! xp is teh 1337 pwnsause rofl blahblahblah" because installing xp is currently not an option (lazy).

Thanks in advance.

Hmph, after doing some more reading, the problem can be solved(ish) by lowering the clock speeds on the ram to around 677mhz or lower. So...

Anyone know a way I can do that without buying new Ram?
i had the same problem as you and googled as well. there are supposed to be some fixes, but i couldnt get them to work. mine happend with screensavers the most it seemed. although i never got a bsod, only the error after it had restarted basically. my opine would be not to lower the clock speeds. its a driver issue, you might try some drivers other than the dell stock (if thats what you use). fenuxx makes some pretty good ones.

Yeah, I've tried all the drivers; from the stock ones to the ones by Fenuxx to the new 177.70 drivers, nothing works. Ive all the (logical) fixes I can find and to no avail. One of the only pseudo-solutions I haven't tried is lowering my latency on my RAM; it seems to work for most people but I'm not sure how to do that on my M1710.
The clockspeeds on the RAM are already 667 MHz on the M1710. They cannot go any higher without OC'ing.

Oh...hmmm. I didn't want them to go higher though, just lower.

i just got to thinking.....i didnt think vista had the bsod.....maybe i was thinking of something else. i thought that it would restart without locking up the entire system or explorer.

It will restart very quick but I disabled that so I could see the Stop # and the reason the system halted, thus, I got my favorite BSOD screen back.

Well I'm going to format my computer in t-minus twenty minuets, waiting for files to copy. After that we shall try to install the drivers without any windows updates (I've read that can cause the problem too) and we'll see what happens.

It might just be my pessimistic side but I don't have much faith in it.

lol, good luck!

And the verdict is....!!!

I think it's hopeless. I tired just using the basic driver (no updates installed whatsoever) and the game crashed from the start; figured that would happen.

So then I install only the updates the game needs: DX 9.0c, game patches, and latest video driver, non enhanced. I start to play just fine then I hear the looping sound from one of the npcs and boom, screen goes black and huzzah! BSOD.

So..I think..I'm screwed

Which particular drivers did you use?

And I mentioned the RAM speeds earlier because you implied that 667 and lower was fine. Not that I wanted you to try and fail to oc.

Well I started off using the basic driver that M$ installs for you, that failed epically, as I thought it would. Then I moved up to the newest stock dell drivers available, failed again. So then I decided to try the latest nVidia drivers, the 177.70, unenhanced, from the nVidia site, and I got the same error. Next I tried older drivers versions back to 150.xx, still got that error. Tried the drivers from Fenuxx, both tht 175 and the 169, still got my lovely BSOD.

I was using driver cleaner and manually removing the driver parts from my system after each set.
ve given me this problem.

Well I "fixed" it. I partitioned my disk a and made a 20GB winxp pro install. Currently playing the game without a hitch.

On a side note..

My computer is defaulting to XP without even giving me the choice to choose vista. How can I change it so I get both options on the boot loader? I tried the "Check all boot paths" in msconfig but that did nothing for me. Would I have to set it up in boot.ini and if so how?

Vista is C:\
All install paths for Vista are default

Thanks

Okay..!@#$

I edited the boot file in vista using bootcfg, so that's all squared away. I was playing Black and White 2 on XP without a hitch for about 1 1/2 hours, then it died on me. Gave me the nv4_dsp has stopped responding, which is equivalent to nvlddmkm.sys

So I think my next step is to talk to dell about my card/system. I still have my complete care warranty for the next two years so maybe they can try swapping out the video card? I'll keep everyone updated.

So I talked with support, they're sending me a new card. I'll let you know the status if it fixes it.

What games is it that craps? Only Black and White? Does it BSOD with other games?

Does it BSOD just idling in windows? Watching a DVD?

Yep only Black and White 2. Also it started to hang on startup for vista, I have to reboot 3-4 times to make it go through startup. I reformatted thinking it was something I did, right off the bat it was hanging out startup.

Parts been back-ordered so it will take a little longer than I hoped.

We'll Dell said they would send a new 7900.
Backordered
Then Backordered again.
(Yesterday) They said I could do a system exchange, I called them and they said it would be quicker to send me a 7950 GTX, I wasen't complaining. The tech said they had them in stock and could ship it right away.
I got a call today.
Back-ordered.
??
