M15X how to add second screen/external monitor - Page 2

Oops - I was describing going from VGA output to HDMI input. It is still the same problem going from HDMI to VGA, it just needs a different sort of converter box - like this tiny and relatively cheap one - approx $130

this device is DVI-D to VGA and would also need a HDMI to DVI-D cable. This converter takes its +5v power from the HDMI/DVI cable so no external power supply is needed.

sorry for any confusion.

OK thank you for explaining. But the weird thing is, I can get them to plug together... Its not that I want a HDMI signal through a VGA cable, but I just want any signal coming through. It does not need to be HDMI.

So it starts as HDMI, get 'downgraded' to DVI-I and then gets 'downgraded/converted' to a normal VGA signal. Won't this work?

I asked a local PC shop owner and he said it could be done...

I'm getting confused now

The PC shop owner is wrong.

HDMI carries digital video and audio in the same connector.

DVI-I carries digital and analogue video - but they are separate, it cannot convert digital signals into analogue signals

DVI-D only has the pins for digital video

VGA is only analogue

Converting HDMI to DVI is not downgrading - the signal doesn't change, its still the same ones and zeros, it is simply a bit of wire soldered between some pins on different styles of connectors, you just lose the ability to connect the audio through the same cable as the DVI connector doesn't have any audio pins

Please don't wate your money - better off buying a new monitor

Okay thank you. I understand.

Kinda dissapointed now

I would get a new monitor that has the HDMI port rather than spend that kind of money for and adapter.

Yes you're absolutly right... The money will be better spent.

(nonetheless, a new HDMI screen will cost more than 150€...)

If you give it some time, the prices will come down a little.
