AC Adapter replacement

Thread Starter
When replacing an AC adapter for a laptop, how critical is the "Output Voltaqe" rating?

I have a Satellite A-105-S101 with a ac adapter with an output voltage rated at "19V 3.42A".

I dont want to pay full price for one from Toshiba so I am looking at aftermarket models on Ebay and elsewhere.

But it is very confusing!

I did a search using the part # on the adapter and came up with many matches of new aftermarket adapters that fit the output rating.

But my Satellite model was not listed as being a compatible model and when I e-mailed 3 of the vendors I recieved one personal reply
stating that that adapter would not work with my laptop and two automated replies stating that if my model was not listed then the adapter would not work.

When I did another google and ebay search using the laptop's model # I found adapters that listed my model as being compatible but when I read the output specs they were slightly different from the original adapter. For example, one rating is for 19V, 3.95A.

Another output rating was 18V 4.9A.

Will the difference in amperage between what either of
these and the original adapter harm my laptop?

You bet, fry something on the mainboard if the amperage is higher and not enough power if the amperage is lower.

i personally try to stay at least the same as the voltage. more amps and wattage are ok, most, if not all of the times

cheers ...
