Asus Linux load problems

Thread Starter
My new Asus M50VM laptop arrived yesterday and I have had NO success so far in loading Linux. It just hangs at the start of install. I also was unable to mount the Helix Live CD, but that may be a separate issue.

I have loaded RH Linux on hundreds of systems, but have never encountered this issue. I am attempting to load from a download image on DVD.

Any suggestions? Please tell me that I didn't sink all that money into a laptop that won't be capable of running Linux!

Do you get any error message whatsoever? And have you tried Ubuntu? I tend to find Ubuntu does better with laptops IME, you could also try eLive if feeling a bit more adventerous.

Well now I suspect it is because of that blasted Vista+Sp1 that came with the unit. I heard from someone that MS put some kind of stop to the ability to load Linux on the machine once Vista is on there?

Any clues on that?

And no, no error messages on the linux load, just hangs.

Not true. I have Vista SP1 on my laptop and I just loaded Ubuntu Studio on one of it's empty partitions as well as eLive before that and I have not had any problems getting them to load. So far my favorite distro is eLive- The eye candy of Vista without the massive amount of resources...

I'm not sure what the problem is, but I've had the same experience you're having. switching distro's will usually resolve the problem. Try, ubuntu, elive, or even SuSe (apologies to abf), and see if one of them doesn't load for you.

Good luck. Post back and let us know how it goes for you.

Have you tired a 64bit distro yet? (Just guessing)

Linux distros sometimes are a little slower to adapt to a new chipset (Intel's Montevina in this case). You may just have to wait a few weeks until there's an update for your distro. (or you could compile it yourself)
