Screen vs Inverter Problem

I've been having a problem with my Sager 3880 screen not working. I've been using it for awhile hooked up to a monitor and have determined that it either has a problem with the screen or the inverter board. I was wondering how to figure out which one it was? I don't want to buy another screen if it's the inverter that's bad.

Thanks for your help

1). LCD black, no chance of seeing anything, even with a flashlight poiting to it = inverter
2) if you see something with the flashlight = backlights
3) disclaimer: normally that is so as stated

Crap, I can see something with the flashlight so it looks like its the backlight. I was hoping it was the inverter as that was cheaper to replace.

Backlights also cheap to replace, only a bit more pain to play with

Ok so I replaced the screen only to have more problems. On the new screen, I can't see anything, even when using a flashlight. At the same time, I think my hard drive died. I get messages saying it can't find the media and then that it has no OS. The hard drive was working prior to replacing the screen.

I'm unsure where to proceed from here. I need to figure out if the screen is DOA or not. At the same time, I'm a little apprehensive about spending more money on this laptop by buying a new hard drive if there is some other problem that I'm unaware of.

EDIT: Obviously the error message about not finding a OS came when I plugged it back to the monitor.

. if you put the old screen back and get the same old issue (possible with flash light) then the replacement is DOA - it happens
. your drive: try removing it, and reseat it

I've just ran the Samsung ESTOOL program. It auto detected something. When I tried to do the drive diagnostic program, it won't run. I then when to drive information. Instead of getting information like in the picture below, the model name, serial number, and F/W were blank. The current size of the drive was zero and the native size was 8160 MB. Some of the other things are shown as being off. Does this confirm the drive is dead?

EDIT: Also, I put in a windows cd and when to the recovery console. It look like it didn't recognize the hard drive. I couldn't do chkdsk.
