I'm trying to diagnosis a Dell XPS m140 laptop. It was sent it for a dc jack repair but upon inspection the DC jack is completely fine, continuity and proper voltage (so the adapter is fine as well)
I was doing my testing on what I guess you would call an I/O board that the bigger main board plugs into, this I/O board contained the dc jack, usb, vga ports.
I combined the two board again to see if I was getting any voltages to the main board. I plugged the power adapter in and I immediately noticed the light on the power brick fade away and go off. Tested it, no voltage like before. Unplugged it from the laptop, unpluged it from the wall and then plugged it back in, green light on again. Plugged it back into the jack...fades out. Repeated that with a 2nd adapter I just happened to have on hand, same result. So unpluged the I/O board again and when I plug the power into the I/O board without the rest of the main board the light on the power brick stay on and bright.
Has anyone else seen this before....never realized the power brick was intelligent like that to turn itself off? Right now I'm leaning towards bad motherboard. Any thoughts?? PLease? thank you.
