|The PlayStation 3 continues to evolve with each firmware update, but not every update can be as exciting as, say, version 2.4 was. With little notice, the latest PlayStation 3 firmware update, version 2.42, has snuck out. What exactly the update does, though, remains to be seen.
There isn't much information on what the firmware update includes. The official word from Sony, spilled on the company's blog, states that the update "improves the playback quality of some PLAYSTATION 3 and PlayStation format software." Upon testing the update, it seems like the interface has gotten a little zippier and trophies are loading faster, but little else is outwardly noticeable.
Some are speculating that this firmware has stealthily included the forthcoming Life With PlayStation news and weather application. The update is pretty beefy—weighing in at about 130MB—so something must be going on behind the scenes beyond just "playback quality" fixes. Sony previously announced that the Life With PlayStation app would launch before the month was out, so a Thursday PlayStation Store update with the new app seems likely. Stay tuned for more information later in the week.
I haven't updated yet, but as the article eludes to...it's a pretty big update with little detail in the release notes.
