x34 BIOS release for m15x

post #1 of 6
Thread Starter
As of today, Alienware has made the x34 BIOS update available for download via your MyHive at http://support.alienware.com

This update has been released to resolve CPU down-clocking issues, as reported by some customers. For complete assistance on installing this update, feel free to contact our Technical Support team and walk through its installation over the phone.

Features and fixes in this BIOS release:

* Fixes Multimedia Board buttons not functional after sleep when opening the lid.
* Default profiles for screen brightness set to AC 100% and DC 40%.
* Fixes CPU speed profiles.

Additionally, we will be releasing a temperature utility that will properly display your current temps. This is expected for release shortly and is to be used with x34 - you may still update your BIOS'

Thank you,

Armando

I did want to write a follow up on this BIOS. It pretty much does exactly what it says.

1.Reports on the 9xxx CPU are it downclocks after it reaches a specific temp. Reports of what temp vary but it seems to be around 90C. kind of odd, as that CPU can get up to 120C before you have to worry but this BIOS fixes that. no longer downclocks the x9xxx CPU at all.

2.By default, the CPU always downclocks and increases frequencies by demand (speed step). For example with power setting Always On (or max performance in Pista) the CPU will idle at ½ speed, and bump up to full speed by demand. This technology has been around forever but you could always disable it. That was not the case prior to this BIOS. Now with Always On settings the CPU stays at max speed all the time (while on AC power).

3.This did not address battery downclocking, which is much worse then the AC downclocking. On battery the system ½’s the CPU speed and does not dynamically adjust. Thankfully you can correct this with RMClock.

The AC CPU auto downclocking was a minor grip of mine. It did dynamically adjust properly all the time so it was not that big of an issue. But for peace of mind, it great that we can turn this feature off. My thoughts on this was to keep the systems temp down, but since the GPU BIOS fix were not hearing about any fried GPU so this fix makes sense.

This must be really great news for 9xxxx CPU owners

Sure this gives users more flexibility, but personally, I would not warranty a CPU which I constantly let customers run 90+ C.
