i bought a HP dv 6850 about a month ago,n last week, the dvd drive stopped detecting dvds and cds (any type of disc) whenevr i insert them....sumtimes when i tried like 10 times, itd read once, and after abt 10 minutes, stop reading again.....
i then used the hp recovery manager to take the notebook back 2 the original factory settings....n the first time i turnd it on, there was no dvd drive!!! even device manager didnt show any.
the next time i turnd on the notebook, the dvd drive shows on my computer, n on device manager, but it doesnt read any discs at all.....
my drive is a TSST TS-L632N, according to my lightscribe control panel....
ne suggestions on how i cud fix dis problem?

Based on your description of the problem, it really does sound like a hardwae issue, not the drivers. If it was out of warranty, I'd say that replacing a slimtype dvd writer is simple enough, but since you've only had it for around a month, it does sound like letting HP fix/replace it is in order.

As long as you yourself purchased the laptop brand new < 1 year ago, just do an HP Chat http://welcome.hp.com/country/us/en/contact/chat_1.html and make sure you have your P/N and S/N from that white sticker on the bottom. These DVD have a history of going bad. Yes, it's free for them to send you a new dvd drive. But, some companies may require you to pay to ship a defective part back.

Yep, what dr/owned said...

HP might give you the option of sending the whole unit back, or them shipping you a new dvd drive...frankly, it is so damn simple to replace the drive (this consists of one whole screw to remove/replace!) I can't picture any point in not just having them send you the new drive. Not 100%, but most likely they will have you send the defective drive back...no biggie there!

Really, it is a good thing that this went early on and your warranty covers it!

In general, you never want to send your whole computer back unless you absolutely positively HAVE to. You're basically asking for them to ram a screwdriver through your LCD and claim it was damaged in the mail. Not to mention the fact that they'll erase the hdd for no reason.

Just a tip to elaborate on what PeteC2 said.

Hmmm, where can/will they be willing to ship an optical drive? I don't know, it may or may not have to be your home location. That is something that you will have to discuss with them.

You should write down all the pertinent information (serial number etc.) from the bottom of your notebook, so that it is handy when you speak w/customer service.

At any rate, contacting HP for warranty service is simple regardless of where you are, just go on line to their support center!

Use this link to use HP Chat: http://welcome.hp.com/country/us/en/contact/chat_1.html

Enter in your model number on the right. That's the easiest method to contact them but I don't think they'd be willing to help you internationally.

They should be able to send you one. There is only 1 screw holding in the dual layer/lightscribe optical drive and that screw is accessible from the bottom of the notebook.

If you do have to send in the system, remove the hard drive and take pictures of the system. In case they do damage it or it gets damaged during shipping. I have seen things like that happen before, it is good to have some proof

^ Yes to the single screw (for my notebook atleast)

^ Definitely agreed with your suggestions as to what to do before sending in the notebook.

post count +1

And I could just as easily say that you saying "post count +1" is +1 to your post count. At least what I said is contributing to the topic. Stop pretending to be police of the forums.

hmm yikes. good luck to you! I've had two nec drives fail on me in the past. I've had the tsst in my c700 randomly open a few times, although it hasnt happened recently. Not some silly program/virus since I had it sitting in bios and it even did it once. Maybe I'll see how it is and maybe exercise warranty before the end of the year if it keeps up.

That's the situation with my friends laptop...he can read fine he just can't write so if it isn't broken it'll likely become broken again in the short term future.

If it were my system and still had factory warranty, I would definitely have it replaced. Some cd drives fail by not reading any disks, some when they fail will only read but not write. I have seen some drives read regular cds but not dvds.

There are many types of failure with cd/dvd drives. They are one of the only moving parts inside of a notebook and they will fail eventually.
