HP DV5z

Thread Starter
I just got a new HP DV5z with the AMD Puma core (ZM80 i think it is) and it came with Vista installed. I was really trying to like it, but it just blows too much for me.
So anyway, anyone try a *nix distro on this laptop yet? My experiences with Linux are limited to Ubunto on a Dell laptop a year or two back and I remember having loads of problems with wireless NIC drivers. Im looking for a Linux driver that just installs and everything just works, wireless nic, bluetooth, webcam, 3dgfx, teh whole nine yards. Anyone try Linux on this sucker yet?

While I don't have experience with Linux on that particular laptop, I have found success with eLive Linux on the following: Lenovo z61m, Dell d620(and d630) and my personal laptop AW m5500. So far everything just works, and it is a great distro. It has the eye candy of Vista, without using as much resources. The current Ubuntu works well too, as I have tried both the regular Ubuntu 8.04 and the Ubuntu Studio 8.04. If you'd care to give them a try I think that you might find them suitable for your needs. Good luck!

I installed Ubuntu 8.04 on my new dv5z. The installation was mostly pretty easy, but some features didn't work. If you try to suspend to RAM it will go to sleep, but it won't wake up properly after that, it always hangs during the wakeup. The BIOS in this thing has specific checks for Windows Vista, you won't be able to monitor your CPU temperature in Linux without patching the ACPI DSDT. The wireless card in mine was the 802.11 a/b/g/n Atheros AR5009. There's a driver for it in the 2.6.27 Linux kernel (ath9k), and I'm using that now. But it's not supported in the 2.6.24 kernel that Ubuntu 8.04 uses. So if you're comfortable building your own kernels, it's not a big problem. But it's still a hassle at the moment.

I have the HP DV 6700 with the Intel 4965AGN wireless card and I'm having a lot of issues with getting it to work. I guess there is a lot of issues with getting wireless to work with the Intel cards.
