College Student

Hello All,

I'm graduating high school in a couple of months, and then I'll be off to college come August . Anyway, I've had a Compaq Presario 1600 laptop for three years (PIII 500 mhz, 64 megs ram, 6 gig 4200RPM ) Needless to say, that computer will not be joining me at college. I've been using that computer pretty much exclusively since I've had it, though my family does have a few more computers that I've had to resort to using now since a) the damping in the screen is shot, so it no longer stays upright on its own and b) the hard dive makes very strange, Looooooong clicking and beeping noises whenever I click the mouse and c) IE won't run anymore So, I was originally planning on waiting until August got a little closer to actually buy my computer, but I figure now is as good a time as any, particularly since my current computer is in such poor shape. After a lot of internet shopping, I found and fell in love with the ABS Mayhem G1. I have no problem waiting for the rumored G2, just to see what it offers. That being said, I would like to keep my price around ~$2k (books are expensive enough ). Now that I've found notebookforums.com, I have begun reading about 64 bit processors, and that worries me. Would I be wise to take a pass on the 3.0 ghz HT P4 in the G1 in favor of an AMD64? Would I run into any compatibility problems with the AMD, or would *ANY APPLICATION* that ran on a Pentium also run on an AMD? Lastly, if you were to recommend me one system, what would it be? Thanks very much!

Zach

If you're going to college don't you want a laptop that has a semblance of battery life? Maybe you should take a look at some Centrino notebooks that typically get a 4 hour battery life. The ABS Mayhem G1 which you have fallen in love with is listed having a 2 hour battery life but I woul be surprised that with its 3.0 ghz HT P4 it could even get an hour and a half. That processor is a desktop processor thrown into a notebook. Mobile P4's with HT technology havent come out yet; and will they ever?
Ah, 64 bit processors. There still isn't a 64 bit windows yet, only a beta version. Having said that, Amd has designed their Athlon 64 to run both 32bit applications as well as 64 bit in the future. In fact, the athlon 64 outperforms the 3.2Ghz P4 at many tasks due to its 1600mhz bus speed compared to the P4's 800mhz as well as other things.
Now when I go to college Im going to be looking for laptops with the best components that still yeld great battery life. One system that I have been recomending often is Hypersonic's CX6. It has the Pentium M processor up to 1.7Ghz which some people will argue compares to a 2.5Ghz P4-M while others say it compares to 2.8Ghz P4-M. This processor can handle just about every task. The CX6 also have a 15.4 WXGA screen and comes with ATI's 9600 Pro Turbo or 9700 with 128mb so this system truly can game.
If you really don't care about battery life than the ABS G1 is a very nice system to look at. You can get even faster systems but they are much, much more bulkier such as Dell's XPS.

I too would look for notebooks with Centrino Processor. This is especially important if you plan to take your notebook along with you all over campus...long battery life and built in wi-fi already.

The Penium-M is the processor that is part of the Centrino package. The processor does not have built in wireless. The package comes with an inferior 802.11b wireless while my m6805 came with 802.11g
Enderet was harsh but accurate.

Sorry for being harsh. I guess I could have answered it in a nice way... however, you see this same mistake all over the place. Sorry Will if I offended you, its just people who are misinformed then go and tell other the same crap they learned by some other person that didnt know what they were talking about and then it keeps going.

Most hardcore gamers are harsh....

Of course, since this is the net, ppl are more likely to be more blunt and harsh than they normally would be in real life.....

What does being a hardcore gamer have to do with being harsh?

BTW, I am not a hardcore gamer... in case you had already made that assumption.

Wrong. You can get 802.11b/g in a Centrino package.

"The Intel(R) Pro Wireless 2200 is the integrated wireless LAN (WLAN) solution for Intel Centrino(TM) mobile technology. At up to 54Mbps, integrated 802.11b/g takes wireless networking to the next level with performance that is almost five times faster than 802.11b (11Mbps)."

Hardcore gamers will get mad at you if you don't play the way they like....but then again I'm the one who's controlling the character....I don't have the time to get that angry over a video game...

Prozach: if you're getting into college, i will definitely have to recommend something with LOOOOOONG battery life. THOUGH it really depends on your major, but i used my laptop for taking notes (i type fast, i assume you do too) - and there are plenty of times my battery ran out on me that i had to find a nice small computer with long battery life... i sacrificed the games for that because all in all - you're in college to learn! but hey... make do with what you want.
