HP hard drive size

"HP's version of Windows is also pretty much married to the original hard drive and partition sizes. You may not be able to make any changes there, either."

I just read the above claim in another forum. I find it hard to believe (The guy wants to get a larger HD than his existing 40 GB). No model specified.
Is there any truth to it?

Thank you, but that doesn't answer my question.

Then I guess I don't understand what you are asking. Can you please rephrase it.

Can you replace the HD in an HP laptop with a larger drive?
I've done this with several laptops, but the guy I'm quoting seems to be saying that there is something about HP Laptops that makes this difficult or impossible.

uh he does not know what he is talking about then

however, i do recall something about hard drive size with PATA vs SATA in desktops back long ago when sata drives first shipped forgot the whole story........but not laptops nor HP

if that 40gb (which im sure it is) is pata, i can replace it with a 100gb pata 7200rpm drive if i so choose

As long as the size is the same and the interface is the same then i see no reason why you couldn't put a 500 gb hdd in a HP laptop taht only came with a 40 gb hdd.

Yeah, there is no "magical" HP hdd's.

Unless he's running on a really old southbridge that doesn't have a large enough LBA to address all the sectors. But that's really rare.
