How is the LCD display on this model? Is it super bright with good viewing angles?

Believe it or not, I had the small chance to sit the M1730 & P-7811 next to each other booted. In honesty, I liked the FX wuxga better. Whether it was better factory calibration or a better LCD brand, I liked the colors on the FX better. The brightness and viewing angles were visually equal.....None stood out better than the other.

Cool. The reason why I ask is I have a M1730 in front of me and I think the Ultra bright screen is much brighter than the display model P-7811 I saw at BB last weekend. THe P-7811 I saw at BBB (white background) appeared grainy and the the viewing angles was poor. Perhaps the display model has a different LCD panel installed than the one you have?

It's possible but for me the differences weren't noticeable to me.
Oh, my original reason for buying the 7811FX is my daughter was born last month. I needed to get the best gaming value for my $$$.
Keeping the M1730 would have meant +$800 for the 8800SLI upgrade let alone if they come out w/ the 9800SLI setup. Having funds tied up for the next year or so.....the FX fits my needs.

Before everyone gets all wowed by the 8800GTs or 9800GTS that comes on these new Gateway units one has to remember that the GTS is really a 9600GT. That said they are very nice units and I bought one for my son for his birthday. For what I paid for my laptop I could have bought 3 of the Gateways.

Yes, it does, right next to the filled one.

So since it has a second bay does it support raid 0? I want to get it and then purchase another 200 gig hd and try and put it in raid 0

No you don't. =/

Seriously, one would've thought the RAID craze would be dead by now. It was bad enough when it involved only stationary drives in a stay-put tower case. The ideal companion for that second bay isn't cost-effective to add yet: a third or fourth-generation SSD about a year from now when more bugs have been ironed out and the R/W speeds are brought more in line with current-gen drives.

RAID in a notebook simply is not worth it and you're asking for trouble.

I have to agree, Unless you are a backup happy person that constantly remembers to do it, raid 0 is not for you in a laptop. Too many things can happen.

Don't get me wrong if you can use it, power to you, but really not all that much use for a notebook with a two drive raid just for a little but more read/write speed. 30MB/Sec transfers are good enough for pretty much everything most bottlenecks these days are not drive related. =)

Now mirroring has more use though =)

I have the 6860FX its a nice rig, I assume the 7XXX series is about the same =)

This all sounds good guys. I just bought one of these and I should be picking it up on Saturday. After getting rid of the Bloatware I intend to install Crysis:Wars and see what it will do.
eOver the years it seems that I spend about $1000.00 per year on a gaming laptop. Up to now I have had to put up with crappy performance for the last year or so. If I get two years out of this one I'll be happy.
