5690 vs. 8790

Thread Starter
I saw some posts mentioning that the 5690 was darn close to the 8790 in the benches, and I think I need to reiterate something that Adam said. The 5690 comes clocked at 500/300 stock, and the 8790 comes way underclocked. I grabbed the results from the 5690 review and put them together with the 8790 overclocking guide results that Adam did with the GPU overclocked to the same settings, and here's what it looks like:

UT2K3 1024 X 768 Flyby
8790@ 500/300 190 FPS
5690@ 500/300 167 FPS

UT2K3 1600 X 1200 Flyby
8790@ 500/300 85 FPS
5690@ 500/300 71 FPS

3DMARK01 SE
8790@ 500/300 13,309
5690@ 500/300 13,326

3DMARK03 (340 Patch)
8790@ 500/300 3,971
5690@ 500/300 3,875

Aquamark 3
8790@ 500/300 31,819
5690@ 500/300 31,376

Hope this helps

Thx for the comparison i cant wate to upgrade my 5670 the the 5690 it looks like to out porforme my desktop by quite a bit. i also can run my games at 1600x1200 with details MAXED on my desktop, so the 5690 looks promising. i just hope i can get the 2.4 EE in it, i emailed sager and they said they only offer the 3.2... but i dont see why the 3.4 wont work.

Has anyone (Adam?) tried to overclock the 5690, yet? Or are the stock settings as high as they can comfortably go without causing problems? Would love to see if it could handle more and if so, what the scores would be!

So does this mean that the 8790 would be better for gaming, or just good for having the bigger screen?

Yes, I played with overclocking the 5690 and it doesn't overclock very well. It comes pretty optimized.

I'm deciding between these two, so let me see if I have this right.

8790 pros - A larger screen, allows for a 256 mb video card.
8790 cons - Heavy, warm, oddly proportioned screen, costs more, uglier.

5690 pros - Pretty, more usb ports, can be customized almost exactly like 8790, lighter, cooler (in temperature ).
5690 cons - No 256 mb video card available.

That's what I've taken out of what I've read in the forums recently. I can't find a reason to get the 8790 other than the video card that I can't get in the 5690. I want my laptop to last a long time cause I'm taking it to college with me, so I want the best available right now. Anyone have anymore good pros/cons for either?

If you're not going to have a TV in your dorm room, the 8790 will be good for watching TV on.

The 5690 has a dual-battery option.

How dare you, my 8790 is beautiful.

You're very wrong there. It might be opinion, but many people agree the 8790, is much more prettier and sleeker looking.

One more voice added to the dissenters. I personally think the 5680/90 is a horrendous looking beast. The 8790 is more up my alley for what a notebook should look like. Sleek and elegant If they'd just move the steekin' ports from the front...

And fudsak, the 8790 has an "oddly proportioned screen"? Uh... it does? Mine doesn't. Maybe I got an odd one out of the batch, but the 1440x900 resolution on the 17" widescreen isn't proportioned oddly at all. Especially if I'm watching a DVD. A more common 4:3 screen is going to be "oddly proportioned" if you're trying to watch a DVD on it.

square or rectangular ?
regular or glossy ?
4:3 or 16:9 / 16:10 ?
vcd or dvd ?
games in small pics but better details or in big pics but less details or can it be adjusted?
options .. options .. options

The 8790 is sleek and elegant? I think the 5690 is exactly that too!

Nothing wrong w/ agreeing to disagree, Neo Difference is what makes the world go 'round. I've got nothing but respect for the 5680/90 as a performance machine (but that doesn't stop me from thinkin' it's ugly ) I won't hold it against you if you think my 8790 isn't a cool deal

the 8790 looks better

the 5690 has an outdated look (remember when alienware used to use this chassis)

something about the two-tone blue/silver on the keypad/palm area looks wierd

unless of course u get it painted

I'm not so into the business look, so the 5690 looks a lot more "fun" to me.

and no glossy screen on 5690 : (
Which one runs hotter?
You could have a glossy screen on the 5690... All you need is a NuShield:Check This!

The 5690 is 500/300 stock? I don't think so... at least not on mine. In powerstrip, it says 472/276 for my new 5690. Does that mean I can safely clock it up to 500/300?
