## my machine has gone insane ##

! ! ! HELP ! ! !

My computer is a Sager 9750 that is totally messed up at the very start.
It seemed to be working all right the other night.
I was able to do everything as usual,
although I must say that it had trouble booting a few times in the recent past,
once a while back and I think it was as many as three times last month.

I really need this machine to work; I have tons of work projects on it that I was just about to back up.
No really, I promise that I was thinking about backup.
It is bad enough that I only have dial-up,
but I had to build a working computer out of old Pentium parts to send this message, so I need to stop ranting and get back on topic and the severe problem.
When I started up the computer on the following morning,
I was planning to get back to the workflow of my many projects.

1. I turned on the external hard drive
2. I turned on the external sound system
3. I pushed the power button on the Sager
4. Sat back and waited
5. Got the usual components listing page ( used to impress my friends)
6. Machine seemed to have booted
7. Then the BSOD flashed (it was only on for one second,
far too fast to read anything)
8. The machine immediately went into F8 mode
9. I chose to boot again in normal mode
10. Same thing BSOD and F8
11. So I chose safe mode and looked around in device manager
and other places
12. Then tried system restore a couple of times
13. Nothing worked so that’s when I really put my foot in it,
I tried to reinstall the OS (XP PRO)
14. Now I am totally screwed because guess what,
machine has to be up and running to install !
15. The computer now keeps cycling into reboot, flash of blue, reboot,
and I feel like an idiot !

? ? ? Where do I go from here ? ? ?

Should I swap out the hard drive, are the RAM sticks fried, is the BIOS corrupted ?
If I swap out the drive, can I use it as a secondary and will I then be able to extract files ?

any suggestions will be greatly appreciated

thank you in advance

Eric aka reboot
now it is really reboot lol

update

well I finally figured out how to freeze the blue screen
long enough to read the details.

the important stuff is as follows,

DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQAL

and the techie stuff is:

***STOP: 0x000000D1 (0x00000000 , 0x00000002 , 0x00000001 , 0xBA4DEA80)

*** Teefer.sys - Address BA4DEA80 base at BA4DC000 , Datestamp 4170768c

Now I understand that the first part is a fairly common problem caused by one of several possiabilties. I don't know zip about all the zeros, but I have learned that Teefer.sys might have something to do with my anti-virus software or it might be a virus.

So my question now is, does anyone out there know how to fix this mess when the only access I have to my hard drive is now through the recovery console

thanks for looking but I really need help, can it be fixed or do I need to swap out my drive, and if I do are the files still retrievable.

REBOOT aka a very sad Eric

Go back into safe mode. Uninstall any of the frewall security software listed below that might be installed.

OK so I broke down and spent my lunch money on a new drive.

It’s a Western Digital Scorpio black (160GB / 7200RPM / SATA / 3.0Gb/s

It seemed to be a nifty drive for a nifty price and I am thinking that it is compatible with my system and a great improvement in performance ? ? ? But I got troubles up the yazoo.

The bios does not see the new drive and the bios won’t let make any changes in drive settings. Do I need to change jumper settings or is the problem in the bios. The problem is that the bios does not see the new drive and does not let me make changes in “user” mode.

I have tried the F6 option when trying to install WIN XP, using the floppy I made with (dlgsetup11_dos) from WD’s web site. All I got was some stupid message about a missing readme file. Then I booted with the floppy, and the program ran fine, but it made no difference. I kept getting NO DRIVE INSTALLED.

What should I do now, should I change jumper settings, is it something in the bios. I am the only person to use this computer, why won’t it let me have access. The original drive was a 100gb 7200rpm-sata unit, so the wonderful Scorpio should be compatible, right? Is there a source for a detailed, step by step instructions that an intermediate beginner like me can understand? It is very slow trying to learn about this stuff from all across the internet.

Everyone has been helpful and I want to send a shout out to all who contributed, but I put my self in a place that I could not get out of with the old drive. That’s why I had to go for the new one. I just wished that I had been a little smarter and a little bit more cautious and done things a lot sooner.
