m7700 shutdown probs

i have looked for a week on these forums and i have tried most of the fixes but to no avail.

A couple of weeks ago while playing wow my laptop would just shut off. Once it shut down i was unable to get it back on.
I came here and thought it was heat related so i found that i had to re apply thermal paste and i used arctic silver 5.
I turned it on and cruised the net, then played wow for about 4 hours before the same happened again. The next day i turned on the computer once more and after 5 minutes...shut down. I did not have my laptop cooler on this time and i did not hear the laptop fans come on at all. I found that i do not have the latest bios and this is the only problem i have had from this computer since i had to send it back for a new mobo and disc drive 4 years ago.
Thanks for the help before this rig goes to ztronics.

my specs are:
Intel 2.8 ghz
2 gig ram
nvidia 6800 go pro

Your overheating issues could be coming from the video card itself. First, I would make sure every fan(CPU,System and Video card) are working. My guess would be that there is no or little thermal paste between the video card fan and the chip itself. The video card fan unit can be remove easily since it's only held by four latches around the video card.

I agree with savage, the best bet would be to open the back, clean all the fans and radiators, make sure the fans are all spinning, and consider taking off the heatsinks for the cpu and vid card and applying fresh thermal compound. I'd recommend Arctic Silver 5.

I'd also update to the lates bios as it has the option of turning the fans on all the time, and the cooler you can keep the 7700 the better.

If that doesn't help, it unfortunately may be the capacitors near the cpu are overheating and failing. The classic d900 mobo failure involves charging difficulties, and eventually the machine refusing to boot with the fans and lights working...

thanks for the advice. Is there a link with some pics which can guide me in doing this? where does the paste go on the cpu?

That is what i needed. I will attempt to put thermal paste on both the video card and the chip. I just now cleaned out all the fans and the paste where it meets the heatsink and chip does need to be replaced. Once i get this done ill search the forums for dealing with updating the bios. Thanks again and ill keep you guys updated.
