I currently have 512, but was thinking about getting up to a gig. Has anyone done this and how much of a performance boost do you think I will see? Anything significant?

The amount of performance boost depends on how RAM hungry your applications are. Basically, if your system is having to go into virtual memory (which is actually temporary space taken on your hard drive) then upgrading the RAM will make the system perform better. How much better depends on how much you needed to swap to and from VM (and how fast the HD is for that matter).
If you started with 256 MB and doubled it to 512, you would probably see a BIG difference. Going from 512 to 1 GB would usually be significant, but not as big a jump. 1GB to 2GB normally is only worth while if you are running applications that really use a lot of memory - the vast majority of people are better off spending the money on other things than going to 2GB of RAM.

upgrade it later since the ddr sodimm memory will be way cheaper maybe a year later.
