, can't decide on what laptop to get! lol

I've owned the P-6831fx and the Alienware M9750. Hands down the gateway outperforms the M9750 in ever aspect especially when you save 50% of what I paid for my Alienware.

Typing on one now... a few things to note: while some early reviews listed both a fingerprint reader and Bluetooth support neither are actually present. The price at Best Buy 8/18/08 was $1449, not $1399. Finally, the Express Card is a model 34, not the older one as listed; the slot is big like it's for the wider card but it's actually a Express Card 34 inside. Even the user's manual is wrong and lists Express 54 (with pics!), so if this is of real importance to you be advised.

Pros: like everyone says it's hard to beat this puppy on a price/performance scale for gaming. That said I have 2 new drives coming for RAID 0 and if it does not work (as above) I will NOT be a happy camper. The screen is really gorgeous, keyboard has no flex but sounds sort of chintzy, WoW plays beautifully with details I've never seen before, Crysis crashed on me during my first heavy firefight but I was running it 1920 x 1200 with most stuff turned up and 2X anti-aliasing so I may need to go down a bin or two...

Cons: EVERYTHING is glossy, including the keys: if you don't like smudges and fingerprints this is NOT the machine for you! I cannot get Ready Boost to work (no big loss). The wifi connection to my network is not always persistent: sometimes it'll re-connect after boot, sometimes not. Also, this thing is HUGE (and heavy), if you're going to be carrying your lappie much again I'd look elsewhere, and be sure any case you buy will actually be big enough to fit.

I had an ASUS G50V on order but canceled to get this machine, based on the far superior 9800GTS on board. But if you are not a big-time gamer I think the ASUS with the faster CPU may be a more capable all-around Vista machine, and is certainly smaller & lighter; even at this level of hardware Vista is anything but quick and nimble.

Finally, as always your mileage WILL vary!

this is the laptop that ruins the resale value of out Dells lol

If I were in the market for a 9 series GPU I would seriously look at this laptop

Info on the advanced model, P-7812j, can be found here: http://support.gateway.com/s/Mobile/...5785Rsp2.shtml

Basic differences are double the cache (6MB), faster CPU (2.5+), bigger HD (320GB 5400 RPM), Bluetooth, and Blu-Ray drive. I don't know about pricing, however.

Wow, thanks for the info, too bad it's the 35watt model of the 2.53Ghz, 9800m GTS, and 1gb less RAM, but it looks like it'll be customizable!

One last note: after taking delivery of a matched pair of new SATA drives come to find out via Gateway support that the 7811's chipset does NOT support RAID in hardware. It's not a deal breaker for me but if I had it to do over again the ASUS G50V would look better & better; I'll be interested to see some head to head gaming benches between the two.

MaximumPC did a review on this notebook in their October issue:

Quote:
The P-7811 FX's performance certainly doesn't disappoint. In nongaming applications, it compares well to notebooks that are far more expensive, including Apple's $2,500 MacBook Pro and Dell's $2,000 XPS M1530. In gaming, it destroys both those models, as well as others featured in our August notebook showdown.

MaximumPC Verdict: 9

When will the P-7812j model become available?
