Using XP on a new laptop

Hello everyone,
Sorry if this question has already been posted but I didn't find it anywhere.

I'm currently looking for a new laptop (Probably an HP) and I was noticing that they all come with 2-4 gigs of ram. However, I also found out that to run 4 gigs of ram u have to have the "64 bit" version of vista. I DO NOT want vista, and I was wondering, given the compatibility issues with vista and high ram, will I be able to put XP on the computer and run it fine, with both compatibility with the RAM and finding drivers.

Thank you so much, I'm so glad that a forum like this exists!

Putting XP on a new computer that comes stock with Vista is very difficult. You probably will have a hard time finding drivers that will support the hardware, because the vendor will only supply the vista drivers. You can try, but it's not going to be as easy as you think.

As said by steve - it can be done finding drivers is harder, have done it on a dell 1525 - no drivers on the dell site so had to dig around a bit found drivers on bit torrent - seemed someone else had the same problem.

It doesn't matter whether you're running Vista or XP, to use the full 4 gb of RAM you have to have a 64-bit version. With 32-bit the OS will *only* (sarcasm) see 3.5 gb or so. Getting drivers for XP is challenging, but no where near impossible....unlike Taylor Series in Calculus II

With HP's, IMO, the task is even easier since they do have quite large driver stock-piles.

I should mention....it's IMPOSSIBLE to find drivers for 64-bit XP so don't even think about using that.
