Archive and Install option

Greetings! Recently i had a problem with my MacBook Pro - had to replace video chip. Now my computer refuses to go to sleep mode. It won't put the machine to sleep when I close the lid, and when I try to put it into sleep mode via drop menu the whole system halts and I have to reboot through power button. At the repair shop they suggested to reinstall the system using archive and install option. My question is - did any one try this procedure and if yes - what should I do to run it. I could not find anything in mac help menu. Oh, yes, I am still using mac 10.4.11. Second question - if i archive and reinstall - will it keep my passwords for the web sites in my browser? This is really important that I keep my passwords intact. If archive and install won't keep my passwords - what is the option for me to fix my system and keep my passwords. Thank you in advance.

Well if it is just passwords you are worried about, what browser are you using?

If it is Safari, they are stored in a keychain file, and you can move them over into a new keychain file you create elsewhere to save them. There is a keychain access program under Utilities in your Applications folder that you can do all this in.

If it is Firefox, there is a password exporter, and a few password management extensions that will allow you to export all your passwords. I recently did this and it worked fine. I keep a backup of my passwords in a TrueCrypt volume separately though. Several of those extensions do not encrypt your passwords on export so make sure you are REALLY careful on it.

In as far as the archive and install option, I can't tell you to much about it as I haven't used it myself. Looking through the docs linked below, I tend to just lean towards manually backing up and reformatting at that point...
