Dell Studio 1735 ..guess there's no XP drivers for it!

Hi all,

New owner of a Dell Studio 1735 that came loaded with ( of course) WIndows Vista. I was told by the rep at Dell that sold it to me " oh yeah, you can get the XP drivers for it".....yeah right!!

I was able to create a slipstream Windows XP install CD that loads SP2 files and the SATA HDD drivers to avoid the BSOD that I got initially in trying to load XP..so far so good I thought.

Ran Vistaboot to dual boot but that corrupts the NTLDR and I cannot dual boot into anyting but VISTA as I get the message statingthe NTLDR is either missing or corrupted . If I run a repair and then type FIXBOOT , I can then get back into XP.., but of course..., no longer can boot into VISTA ( no big loss but it would have been nice ) and only have XP.

I cannot find the XP drivers for audio , video ( ATI Mobility Radeon 3650 ) or wireless and an UNKNOWN DEVICE. I've looked and looked, but incredibly there seems to be no XP drivers for these devices.

I just feel that Dell has the XP drivers for these devices but somehow is just not releasing them. It's really unfair to be "locked" into one OS ( which , by the way...sucks!) and feel like a idiot for believing the sales rep.

It's a shame also because the Laptop is just gorgeos.

Just my two cents worth.

Thanks for listening to me vent.

Well .... I was able to get ALL drivers installed thru hard work , luck and a Japanese Website that has most if not all of the XP drivers. Hardest one to do was the video driver ( ATI Mobility Radeon 3650) as I has to modiy an existing ATI Catalyst driver.

All's well that ends well.., Goodbye Vista.., shut the door on your way out.

Strange that there was not a single reply to the post.., Oh well.. so it goes

Bye

I just went through the samething with a Studio 15. I found everything i was missing here http://driver.zol.com.cn/list.php?ke...nelid=&x=0&y=0

whats amazing is how much longer that battery lasts with XP vs Vista (way to much crap going on in the backround with Vista)

Yes .., that site has most of the drivers. The Video is not so easy. You have to download the Catalyst 8.6 from ATI and then use the MODDTOOL applet to modify it to work.

Just great the Dell tells you that there is no support for it running XP. I used it with Vista and absolutely hate that OS.

Yea had same problem with a friends 1525 - also has no drivers, found a full set on bittorret, which surprised me - found them through various sites but was really stunned to see the full set on bittorrent. Just goes to show file sharing does have it's uses.

I have a studio 1735 and I'm looking to dual boot Vista and XP.
I will follow what you have siad here and let you know.
I have not made a bootable CD with the MASS STORAGE drivers yet. I've been trying to use a regular XP /SP2 disk, but I had to change the SATA in the bios to ATA otherwise I'd get no where.

This is what I followed.
Read the two pages or so of information, drivers, etc.

Repy if this helps or if you have questions.
After I loaded XP, I noticed the audio quality was pretty bad even with headphones.

I haven't had a chance to look at a studio 1735's BIOS to know if this option is there or not. But typically you can get rid of Windows XP BSODs by turning off AHCI. I had boatloads of trouble with Thinkpad motherboard swaps for one of my customers. They used XP without SATA Drivers and Thinkpad replacement boards ship with AHCI enabled, if you don't turn it off XP will just BSOD on boot or upon install.

EDIT: Just checked the service manual there is an option to enable/disable AHCI in the 1735's BIOS. HOWEVER the factory Vista install will not work if you disable it. Personally I don't know why these laptop makers are pushing AHCI in their systems. AHCI is only good for systems running multi disk RAID arrays with hot-swap capability. You're NOT going to be hot-swapping the internal drives on a Studio 1735.

You'll have to reinstall BOTH Operating Systems with the SATA operation either in AHCI or ATA. You can't switch the two. I'd say just set it to ATA and forget it unless you're running the SSD's that make use of AHCI.

right on mr evil thanks again. so since I dont have any SSD's and I just have the good ol' sata drives ill just try installing in the IDE setting and hope that fixes my issue!! thanks again!
