Question on these new "Netbooks"

Thread Starter
Hello,

I joined this forum and it's my first post because I'm in the market to get one of these small, compact, ultra-light, ultra-mobile, ya-da, ya-da, netbooks as a present for my wife. I see ASUS, Aspire, HP 2133, and anticipated Dell E (or mini-inspirons?) that are available or will be available out there.

I'm leaning towards the Aspire One, unless the Dell comes out, but from what I heard it was just all hype to push the new E-series laptops out.

Anyhow, these tiny things are supposed to run Linux, but do they provide support for multi-media apps such as iTunes? Or, am I better off just getting a regular laptop, or can any of the models mentioned above work with Windows XP, and therefore I can load iTunes? Reason I ask is my wife and daughter are also avid iPod users and if I do get one of these netbooks, they may ask if they can synch up their iPods with it.

Thanks in advance for anyone's help or comments!

I suspect you could probably put Windows on a netbook. The reason why they ship with Linux is because Linux draws a lot less resources (and netbooks don't have as much as a full-size). However, Vista on a 1.6 ghz single core with 1 GB of ram would be hilarious to watch.

so would win xp pro work flawlessly on a netbook, if i put one on?

You could try, if drivers are readily available. Jury is still out to as how xp would perform on a SSD (solid stated drive) without some special tweaks to it. On the other hand I can see a niche for a special of the bag linux/ubuntu ... with a good gui wrapper to dominate the netbook OS of choice

cheers ...

and to Dr, yeah you can put vista on it, it pretty decent, go to the EEEforums youll see many people with eaither xp with a vista skin, or vista, no problems at all

also, any laptop can run windows xp, it takes time finding the drivers, but once you do yer golden, just be sure to make a driver disk

Many of the netbooks can be customized with XP, they just cost a bit more than the Linux based models. Look at the MSI Wind for instance. jkontherun just started a review of it and it sounds pretty good.

I am also in the market for one to replace my current Toshiba. Lenovo, Dell, Toshiba and Averatec (and others too probably) are all rumored to have one on the way before Christmas.
