Upgrading Old Laptop

Thread Starter
I found an old Sony Vaio PCG-Z505LSK in my basement. My dad said he used to use it for work, and it was pretty cutting edge a few years ago. I looked online, and all the sites I found said it can have a maximum of 192mb RAM, but according to my bios i already have 256. My question is, can I get more? I would like to get 512 mb, even one gig if its possible. It also has a P3 700mhz processor. Would it be possible to upgrade that too?

It works fine, I am actually typing this on it. I sucessfully installed the newest version of Xubuntu, but things are still a little slow, and i was hoping for a way to speed them up. Also, are there any better cooling solutions? It runs pretty hot eoven just typing this.

Just to make sure no one asks, yes, i d know how to take it apart and add new ram and whatnot. I just need to know what parts to get, because I really dont know what ths thing can support.

Thanks

Check your HDD. I have a Lenovo running on 256mb and it runs Ubuntu at a good speed.

For a processor that slow, it's highly unlikely that that system would even know what > 512 mb of ram even is. It's like trying to put 12 gb of ram in a system today. 512 it would probably support though but I'm guessing there.

The only cooling solutions available for a laptop are cooling pads which you can search around for ~ $20.

700mhz and 512mb is enough to run XP at a good speed. I know because I had a Gateway with similar specs.
I actually ran into a compaq nx9010 today. Intel Celeron 192mb and it ran XP, though you couldn't multitask well on it.
However, with Ubuntu his system will run well.
