Windows won't boot with new RAM

Hey,

so I took out my old RAM from an old laptop, and put that same RAM into another old laptop, and now it can't start, it says that the system32/driver/pci.sys file is missing or corrupted. The problem disappears if I take out the new stick of 256mb RAM. The Laptop has 128 naturally, and according to sony, can max take 256mb RAM. So with the new stick, it has 384, which the BIOS also recognizes...

It just doesnt add up to me. Why doesnt it work, apart from the fact that sony says it wouldn't work, anyone have an explanation? Thanks

Bios recognising the amount of installed ram does not translate to it would boot up. Ram sockets arrangement (reading voltage, density, and size ..) plays an important part in the boot up sequence. "Mismatched" modules (defined by the manufacturer) will stop the boot up.

my 2 u.s. cents.

cheers ...

Hm, I bought 128mb online, and I get the same problem. What the hell, this sucks. Does anyone have a clue what's wrong, cuz with the new stick I'd have 256mb, just like Sony promises... thanks

. your Sony model?
. download cpu-Z and run it, it will tell you the current ram specs/properties. Verify them against the one you just bought.
