Can't fit my laptop hard drive into a 2.5" USB Enclosure!

I bought a USB Hard Drive Enclosure which I thought was compatible with my Hitachi Travelstar 5K250-160 Hard Drive from my HP-Compaq 6820s laptop as I wanted to place it in there and put a new one in the laptop while recovering the data from the old drive but unfortunately there's a problem as it's too big because there's a protective metal area around the hard drive which I'm scared to remove in case I damage the hard drive as well as a circular area at the back of the hard drive which is preventing the hard drive from fitting in the enclosure.

Are there any USB enclosures compatible with this hard drive or does anyone have any other advice?

you sure its not the hard drive caddy?

if its the caddy you can take it off and be safe.....

pic for refrence:
WITH A CADDY: http://laptoplogic.com/data/resources/images/82/21.jpg

WITHOUT CADDY:http://www.ozhardware.com.au/images/...k/scorpio2.jpg

if it has a caddy, take it off then try again

if it does not, that means you have a 2.9'' or.....90mm hdd i think is the correct measurment..... in that case you need a new enclosure (which im unsure if anyone makes one)

or just sell the hdd and get a 2.5 inch

5K250-160 is 2.5" standard laptop size (5.4K rpm, 160GB...). just use the right screwdriver size (#00 or similar) and loosen the 2-4 screws on the sides usually. the drive should then slide right out of the caddy. the caddy is not part of the harddrive, it is part of the laptop used to affix the drive in place.

Ah, I see... I hadn't realised they'd put the hard drive in a caddy within the laptop itself as they never mentioned it in the manual.

In any case, thanks for the advice. I'll be sure to use the proper screwdriver to remove the hard drive from the caddy [I take it it's safe to do so without needing a anti-static wrist strap?]
