is there a way to set up toshiba p30 so that sound in ubuntu linux work

?

Almost certainly.

Will need the output of...

lspci -v
lsmod

to start with. You will likely need to run one of them as root, maybe both, so prefix them with the sudo command as such:

sudo lspci -v
