Dell E1505 - Drive not Detected

My Dell is a couple of months out of warranty. Suddenly my laptop stopped booting up and Dell diagnostics tell me "error code 2000-0141 - drive not detected". I purchased a new drive from Dell and nothing changed so I returned the drive. I bought a new motherboard (using my original processor and memory) and nothing changed. From other forums I saw a suggestion that I experiment with the boot sequence which I did which let the laptop start up normally a couple of times and then back to the same error. Since replacement of the hard drive and motherboard leaves little else to replace (other than the processor and memory) I am at a loss what else to try. Does anyone have any suggestions?
Thanks, Steve

Try replacing the Optical drive?

Thank you for the suggestion. I tried removing the optical drive and taking it out of the boot sequence but unfortunately I still get the same message. Do I need to replace it or did this test your idea adequately? If so is there anything else you might suggest?

You'll get a "Drive not detected" error if the optical drive is either not working or not installed. So I wanted to know if you tried REPLACING IT, not just removing it. Try that, then see if it works.

Just to clarify, it is the hard drive test that fails, however, I will order a new optical drive if you think that might somehow be related. thanks again. Steve

If replacing the hard drive and motherboard hasn't solved your problem, I would say it is the Optical drive. Inspiron 8200s were notorious for doing this. And it's not unheard of on newer models.

I have ordered a replacement optical drive and once it arrives and I have given it a try I will get back and let you know how it goes. Thanks for your suggestions, Steve

I just installed a replacement optical drive and unfortunately I still fail the on board diagnostics with the same "No Drive Detected" error. At this point I cannot imagine what is causing this since I have changed out the motherboard, the hard drive, and now the optical drive which leaves little else but the cooling fan and the main processor and modem which I transferred to the new motherboard. Do you have any other thoughts before I completely lose it.
Thanks, Steve

What diagnostic are you using? And is that the full text of the error?

Immediately after the Dell boot up screen I get "No bootable devices--strike F1 to retry boot, F2 for setup utility, Press F5 to run onboard diagnostics". After I press F5 the Dell PSA+Pre-boot system assessment begins and during the hard drive test I receive the "Error Code 0141: msg code 2000-0141: Msg No drive detected" error screen.

This might sound like a really retarded question, but what brand of Hard Drive did you get as a replacement. If I recall correctly a couple members here have had issues with some models of SATA hard Drive. Their connectors won't seat properly.

It was a Seagate ST9160823ASG which I bought directly from Dell to ensure it would be compatible with the E1505 laptop. I also had a computer shop hook up my original (and current) drive to their PC and was assured that it was working properly although they did not boot up with it so I cannot verify that it is bootable.

Yeah, seagates work fine as far as I know, I've put two different seagate drives in my D820 without any issues.

The only last thing I can think of is that you wound up getting a 2nd motherboard with the same defect as your original. It's improbable that that happened, maybe you should buy a powerball ticket considering you've beaten the odds.

Thank you for all your suggestions. I also find it hard to believe two motherboards have the same problem but I cannot come with any better idea. I only wish this had happened a couple of months earlier while the warranty was still in effect. Now I guess I'll toss this one in the closet and start looking for a non-Dell replacement. Thanks again for all the help.

MrEvil,
Again I want to thank you for your suggestions. It turns out I refused to give up and I bought another Seagate hard drive (reconditioned this time) and my problem went away. I am at a loss why the first (new) replacement drive did not solve the problem but here I am with a revived laptop and a spare motherboard and optical drive just in case. Thanks again,
Steve

Glad to know you got it back to working Steve, and spare parts can come in handy for when they get scarce. I know generally speaking if I buy an un-used part I can often either keep them for another customer or re-sell it on eBay for the same price I paid.
