Any solution to the "HOT" left area of 8600 palmrest?

Thread Starter
I feel uncomfortable about it when I put my left hand on.
Anyone tried modding it?
I am thinking of putting a pad under the area of my palmrest.

if you have a 5400 ro 7200 rpm hardrive then that would be the cause of the heat little you can do about it

...or you could never turn it on then it never gets hot!

Its a fact of life for i8600 owners. The hard drive sits directly under that palmrest and there is really noting that you can do to stop it generating heat. In any case, it shouldn't get anything more than warm, I have the 7k60 in mine and its just barely warm after hours of use.

what is the max temp you have seen it [the HDD]?
Maximum that I have ever seen mine was 46C after about 8.5 hours at Uni, on the whole time (and a lot of work.... some gaming.... being done).

geez, i've got the 60gigs 4200RPM and it has gotten to 50C+........
I know. Originally in my i8500 I had a 60GB 4200rpm, and it got temps up to and exceeding 50C as well. As soon as I changed to the 7k60 in my i8500 I noticed the speed, quietness and coolness of it.
So of course when ordering my i8600 there was no question, I had to get the 7k60 with it.
Other 5400rpm drives may actually regularly exceed 50C, new technology has helped the 7k60 stay very cool considering its rotational speed.

Two quetions -

1) Doesn't Dell offer 4200 rpm drives (and the 7200) for the 8600, and not 5400 rpm drives?

2) How do you tell how hot it is getting?
1. yes they do

2. fangui using hardrive temp monitor portion of the software
