Networking help.. :(

Hello!

Just purchased an HP dv5-1017nr at Best Buy today. I can't get the internet to work. It sees networks, excellent strengths, and even connects to them, but will not go to the internet. I tried two different houses. It shows that it connects to the network but stays stuck on "Identifying."

Exchanged for a new one being a noob, and this one does the same thing. I have a desktop and another notebook with Vista that works with my router, so any ideas why this isn't working?! I really need the internet for school that started on Monday (I'm a college student.) Here are some settings someone else asked for:

If you click here you can see how it says "Identifying." http://img53.imageshack.us/img53/6023/connectionnc5.jpg

Thank you kindly!
Shane

. are these networks open to public. or just private?
. turn off your antivirus and firewall utilitiies and see
. update your vista to sp1 yet?
. WEP/WAP on from the router?

Did you make sure you're on the correct IP type (static/dynamic)? Did you make sure you're router isn't MAC address filtering (since MAC's change between cards). Did you try connecting to a public wifi spot?

They are not private.
Uninstalled Noton and turned off Firewalls.
I have entered the WEP key several times to make sure I did so correctly.

Thanks

How do I make sure I am on the correct IP type? I have no idea what that means.

I made sure last night that MAC filtering was not on.

I brought the laptop to BestBuy and it connected there just fine.

Thanks

. can you review the current configuration that works at bb? (dhcp, dns ..) are these settings automatic or they have a pre-value?
. the public network: do you have a guide as how to set your network connection up?
. http://documentation.netgear.com/ref...work-3-12.html for reference

Did Best Buy setup a wireless connection, or just plug in a cat5 cable? Presumably the former...

I assume you already went through the settings on the laptop that works, to make sure you have them configured properly for the new laptop?

Someone I know bought a laptop recently that has a button to disable wireless networking (to conserve battery power), which is relatively easy to hit accidentally when closing the lid. Once you know it is there, though, it is easy to avoid, and a blue indicator light turns red when wireless networking is disabled. If that was the problem, though, I'd think the person at Best Buy would have pointed that out.

An anti-virus program once disabled wireless connections on my brother's laptop, though he didn't make the connection at the time. It would detect networks and everything appeared to be fine, but no programs could actually connect (though Windows said there was a connection). As far as he knew it just stopped working, and he had to bring the laptop over to where there was a spare cat5 cable to check his email or get Windows updates, etc. I went through all the setting on the computer and router, removed and recreated the network profile, re-installed the drivers for the wireless card, etc but the problem persisted. Then he needed his laptop back, so used it as it was. Some time later, after using a direct connection to do updates, his anti-virus program came up with a message saying that the program and virus definition files had been updated, followed immediately by a message saying that a wireless connection had been established.
