CQ50Z Maximum Memory (Conflicting stories)

I just bought a Compaq CQ50Z. I want to max out the memory, so I started looking around for what little information could actually be found on these laptops. A great deal of the reviews say the maximum supported memory is 3gb. Any websites I can find (such as crucial) which have the capability to scan my system say the maximum supported is 4gb. When I contacted HP, though, I was told that the maximum supported memory is 2gb.

I know most people would normally say the manufacturer is right on everything like this, but I have contacted them about several different things in the past week. I would say their tech support is lacking considerably, and too many other sites say different things.

Does anyone here know definitely what the max supported memory would be?

Dont have the model myself, so cannot say for sure. But if the specs and memory resellers say that max is 2gigo, then max is 2 gigo. If someone else says otherwise, ask her/him what the bios version is, what OS she/he is using, ask for a screen shot of the system info

cheers ...

The factory and the memory resellers say different things, that is what is confusing me. Compaq says 2gb, but crucial and others say 4gb.

The manufacturer says 2gb because there were no 2gb sticks at the time. My zd8000 and dv9000 are "Officially" 2gb max units but will actually support 4gb. The rest depends on your OS as XP doesn't fully support 4gb. It uses part of the memory space for OS needs, thus limiting the free memory to about 3.5gb of usable memory space.

That is one of several reasons behind my decision to use Ubuntu 64bit as my primary OS, and eventually, I will be switching to Vista 64bit. When I first built my desktop, I had 8gb of memory, and xp was reading it as 3.2gb.

But, your answer makes perfect sense. Even though the Compaq is a new design, it is still likely it would be something like this.
