M9700 random shutdowns?

I do not know if this has already been addressed but i recently bought my brothers M9700. Hes had it for about a year so first i wiped the drive and reinstalled windows vista. Recently I have been having problems with random shut downs. I have an external turgas fan underneath it and im getting temp readings at 79-81 on the GPU and 41-52 degrees core (celsius) if someone can give me any insight it would be greatly appreciated.

I've had some issues with cpu heat causing slowdowns. I solved it by removing the heatsink, cleaning up the fans and applying fresh thermal compound. I use Arctic Silver 5, I think it works much better than the standard heat pads the system ships with. They can dry out and crack over time. It brought the temps down quite a bit for me with my m9700.

My cpu goes from 49 deg C up to the low 80's under heavy load. The gpu temps you posted are normal, so the gpu(s) may not need thermal grease, but if you're going to be in there anyway, I'd consider applying AS5 to both gpu's, the cpu, and the SLI chip. It's all in the tutorial, and it's much easier than you'd think. Just be careful of the pads on the memory on the gpu's, as you'll need to reuse them, or source some new ones.

If you don't think it's temperature, make sure you've got all the latest drivers from Alienware, especially the chipset drivers. I assume you installed the hd controller drivers (RAID drivers) during your install, or you wouldn't be seeing any hd's...

I have read about people that have had to install Vista after an install became corrupted, so you might consider doing the install all over again to make sure it's not vista related.

My bet is a good cleaning and replacement of the thermal compound will probably take care of your issues.

Here is an excellent tutorial on applying AS5 to the cpu and gpu's, with pictures.

Oh yeah....

What software are you using for temps? A lot of these programs won't report temps correctly, or you'll be reading something other than what's labeled.

I use notebook hardware control for cpu temps. The cpu will slow dramatically when it gets into the upper eighties, and is supposed to shut off completely when it gets too hot. It may be your cpu is overheating, and you're looking at the temp of something else. Cleaning the fan/heatsink and fresh AS5 will take care of that.

You should be seeing temps that range from the 40's to the 80's with the m9700 cpu, what you're showing for "core" is too cool for the cpu under load.

i was using Speedfan to get my temp readings is there a reliable freeware program for this?

Notebook Hardware Control. It's a free download, and you can either keep a graph on the desktop to watch the temps, or have the temp show up in the systray all the time.

Speedfan doesn't work for cpu temp with the m9700, I tried it and couldn't get it to work for the cpu...
