new to PCs.. looking for advice

hello everyone..
im new to this forum because my girlfriend is looking for a new laptop. Her old one was some crappy gateway that was SO slow! im a mac person myself but we cant really afford one right now so im looking into PCs for her. i know nothing about PCs so I've been doing a lot of research but i thought i would get some suggestions from people a lot more experienced than me.
shes a college student so she is gonna need it for writing reports/homework, wireless internet, downloading music, fast, reliable, and maybe some light gaming (for me haha). watching dvds, powerpoint, and photoshop would be good also. it doesn't necessarily have to have great battery power or be super lightweight, id rather go with quality here.

so my question is, can anyone point me in the right direction of what to look for? (brands, processors, etc).. shes looking to spend around 1500.. i know we could get a mac for that price but thats for the bottom of the line.. once you add on all the good stuff its way more!

she really likes the sony vaio VGN-CR590.. can anyone second that? or should i be looking elswhere.. thanks so much for anyone that can help

Even the 1099 MacBook—999 with educational discount—can handle everything she wants to do without a problem. The only thing you would really have/want to add to it would be memory. Stepping up to the 1299—1199 with educational discount—MacBook gets you 2 gigs of RAM, 40 more gigs of HD space—160 up from 120—and the ability to write DVDs.

Until the 15th you can even get an 8gig iPod Touch for free and until October 20th you can get a printer for free as well.

You get much more for your money with a Mac than any Sony I've ever seen. Macs have an undeserved reputation of being overpriced where Sony's genuinely are overpriced IMHO.

If you're looking to spend $1500 I don't think budget is your problem. You can get a lot of notebook for $1500. If she wants a Mac get a Mac.

having used (and using) sony and mac - i'd go for mac. Like Woody87 said, mac system pricing is getting very competitive. But moving from windows to apple platform does require some learning curves, consider them carefully before buying.

cheers ...
