Why would you be needing a sevrice tag, if you just order/buy the replacement part away from Dell?

When I called Dell the guy asked me for a id or tag number along with my name and address...

I told him I didn't have one, he said he needed it to access the system, and he didn't care if it was really mine or not, he just needed it to log into the system

When I called back I got a different person, not as nice as the first,
I gave her a id tag i found on ebay and a fake name and my address, she instantly said "NOOOO NOO NO" "this isent your info" I hung up

The End!

Is your Service tag number missing from the BIOS too? Press F2 at the Dell logo screen and on the first page that comes up you should see a field for the service tag.

This is news to me

I obtained this machine from a friend who gave it to me to fix when he moved
as far as I know he obtained it from a chain of people how didn't want it

In short I have no knowledge of its origin and may even had been stolen at one point or another

It was in parts when I received it
with a cracked bottom base a bent and crushed heat sink

So your saying that the service tag number and I'm sure lots of other numbers that would trace this machine back to its origin
are recorded in the BIOS

If this is so and if it was at once stolen
is it possible that when I connect to the internet that it would be able to call out to dell to notify of its whereabouts
if so is there a way to erase this information from the BIOS

Thanks

Adam

. I dont think that any machines are "calling home" at the moment, unless it is equipped with some special software/hardware.
. Now, hacking BIOS, for any reasons, good or bad, is a no-go within NBF. If removing the CMOS battery does not do the trick (reset), then either you can explore alternatives on the net regarding hacking, or simple yet ... send it back to dell for a reset.
. Rewriting BIOS info is not a simple task, if the checksum is wrong, you will be a proud owner of a very heavy paperweight.

If its not "calling home" that's all I care, besides I don't know if it was ever actually stolen.

So do you know of any such calling out device.

Thanks

If the previous owner enabled computrace and paid for a subscription and reported the system as stolen, the motherboard may very well be phoning home to Computrace.

Otherwise, no, it's not going to phone home, though if you call Dell with a stolen Service tag they SOMETIMES will inform the authorities, sometimes they won't help you at all, and the rest of the time they just ignore the fact the system is stolen.
