Battery can not be identified message...

Hi there! I'm new here and would GREATLY appreciate any help that I can receive here....

About 2 weeks ago, I turned on my Dell Inspiron 1501 and the following message came on before I even got to the main windows screen:
Warning: The battery can not be identified. This system will be unable to charge this battery.

I have been able to continue using my computer without problems until last night, I plugged the AC adapter in to charge the laptop and the green light on the adapter did not come on to charge the computer. So I dont know if I am having a problem that will be solved with just replacing the AC adapter, or the battery itself because of the error message.

I called Dell and of course they cant help me as I'm not under warrenty anymore. I have been looking on line and it seems that this is a common problem which isnt easily solved. I dont know anything about the BIOS settings so I dont want to mess with that yet. If anybody has any advice or has dealt with this problem before, I would greatly appreciate any help!!

Thanks!

bios is not exactly scary as some may think

is it just a bios change that will fix this issue?

I have no idea how to fix. I have read different solutions online that address resetting BIOS but dont know how to do that or if that's even the best solution

more likely that the battery is failing (or already bad)

cheers ...

@qhn: why would the battery not be identified if failing? This is an error I've never before seen, though I have had to replace batteries.
