Downgrading XPS Gen 2 from 6800U Go to x300??

Thread Starter
Greetings,

I seems that my 6800 Ultra Go in my XPS Gen 2 has died. Can I put an ATI x300 board in its place? I don't use the PC for gaming much now, and can get a 32MB x300 for $30. I run only 1280 x 800 resolution... would the 32MB card work fairly well enough for non-video-intensive applications? I may want to have my 6800 Ultra Go repaired or replaced with a 7800 GTX, but the expense is considerable. Plus, having a spare to fall back on isn't a bad idea - this is our only computer. At the very least spending $30 would help verify that it is indeed the video board that has failed. I'm also not to keen on spending $300 for a board if it is expected to fail as my 6800U did (though the failure may partially be my fault... I didn't keep up with the cleaning and it did seem to run a little hot).

Can I just simply swap out the board, or would other modifications be necessary? I want this to be seamless. In fact, what about the vanilla 6800? Could I simply swap one of those in? Which boards are reliable? Many thanks!

As Nonya said, when you have extra questions you can just add it to your existing thread and we'll handle you there. Anyway, cards that will work:
ATI: X300, X600
NVIDIA: 6800go (aka vanilla), 6800go Ultra, 7800go GTX

None of these cards as far as I know are expected to fail. In fact, my 6800 ultra was probably the most reliable card I have ever owned. For each of these cards, it would be as simple as uninstalling the graphics card drivers, dropping the card in, and installing new drivers.

Personally I would try to get at least the 64 MB X300 but I konw they are in low supply now so you might just have to settle. It should be fine for 1280 x 800.
