first build since my 486dx! - Page 2

Nice updates, yeah makes sense to keep using what you have

Hey its easy to drawn into the latest and greatest GPU with the media coverage etc, but that 8800GT was king of the hill for medium large dollars just a few months ago so its not exactly a downgrade to go with that; also noise & heat: my 4870s are very much audible as the fans have to be idling at ~38% to keep the gpus cool, they are kind of annoying to me even with the door shut, plus the heat they throw out. So if the 4850s are like that then the noise would bug you.

These P35 P5s have a great rep, you cant go wrong there and some good deals for the discerning buyer

The P182 case is the newer model and its ~$5 cheaper. They are nice, don't think there's much difference between them, there's a review on silentpc.com which has the differences. You can remove the top mesh thing. I replaced the case fans and they are much quieter than the ones which came standard - but like I say I have quiet fans, psu, case design etc and noisy GPUs lol

and a while back I had to replace the psu in my old dell desktop, and got a a similar PSU to that model, but think it was 450watts (cant remember) but anyway it is basically silent - great brand.

(I needed to get a cheap extension ($2) for the 6pin motherboard power cable for my build, and I recommend a magnetic 'philips head' screw driver for picking up the screws which you will inevitably drop, and MX2 paste for the processor)

If you had been doing that build list a few months ago it would have been much more expensive, so your saving loads

Hey ZFB - the stock HSF is ample for cooling....esp @ stock. They're not as 'cheap' as they used to be.

Plus those cores run much cooler than they did back in the Pentium days

out of stock makes HULK ANGRY!

i'm damn close to ordering, maybe i'll get the courage to pull the trigger tomorrow. thanks to everyone for input, and especially to buck for giving me free, quiet, sleeved-wire stylin' fans along with that input

once i finally do order, i'll put up a list of what i finally settled on (in the off chance that someone is just dying to see my middle-class computer specced out just one more time).

thanks again!

I certainly wouldn't consider it middle class. It will run just about any game out there at their respective highest settings...barring something like Crysis (which was created for PC hardware in the year 2020).

Just 5-6 months ago you would look at spending over $2K for similar components.

I think you're going to dig the system.

oh, i'm going to love it, no question.

the middle-class thing was more of a joke, because i won't have the sweetest latest everything in it (which doesn't bother me - i'd rather be able to buy a computer AND put money away to buy land at the same time). i bet it runs tf2 like a charm, and that's the only game i've played in months. i KNOW it'll handle x-com, which i cried tears of joy to see available on steam (lost the floppies that had my copy of it a couple years ago). i'll probably pick up a copy of company of heroes, or another well recieved strategy game, as well.

other than that, lots of graphic design and photo editing, some audio editing, and just standard use. nothing she won't handle with ease.

ARGH, i just ordered that like 3 hours ago

i wonder if they'll credit me if i e-mail them and say i forgot...

edit: they did credit me, so the card only costs $105 after MIR - thanks for the $20, pdonket! newegg's live chat feature is pretty kickass for someone like me who hates talking on the phone, but wants stuff done quicker than via e-mail...

and my mwave order shipped already

edit: newegg order, minus my keyboard, just shipped - c'mon, monday arrival...

i was too eager to build to take any pics during the building process, but i can take some shots tomorrow or the next day of the innards, case, desk, etc.

i'm loving it so far...tf2 looks like a completely different game, my new monitor is bigger than 2 of my laptop screens combined, etc etc

thread can be moved, i don't care where it resides...
