Uninstalling norton 2008 and related questions

Hello everyone,

I have a hp laptop and the packaged version of norton 2008 is about to expire. I want to uninstall it and go for some free antivirus programs as I am a bit short of cash right now and dont want to spend money on av.

Please tell me what would be the safest way to uninstall norton 2008 from my computer. I have vista 32 bit.

I have searched the forum, and found that norton has a removal tool which can be used for this purpose. But while googling I found that it may not be ideal and I have to do some deletion manually.
I am not very tech savvy, so I would very much appreciate for your help.

Also after I uninstall norton, what would be a good protection for my system?

My personal approaches:
. disable all related startup processes and services from norton (i use cCleaner/windows services for this) ... until the next clean install of my vista, or until you decide to pay for norton again.
. currently using windows firewall-defneders+Avast (free)+SpywareBlaster
. zero issue since the beginning of vista
