Help w/ Dell Inspiron E1705 won't power on

Hello all,

I have an Inspiron E1705 that will not power on. Was sitting in its docking bay when I went to bed and in the morning it would not turn on. Pressing the power button will cause the power and hard drive lights to blink once and then nothing. Pressing the power button with the Fn key causes the power and hdd lights to blink once and the three lock icon lights and wifi light to the left of the power button to all blink once at the same time. The fan is not coming on as far as I can tell.

I have re-seated the ram and tried each stick in each of the slots separately with no success. Reseated the hard drive, as well. The AC adapter is working properly (green light is lit when plugged in) and appears to be charging the battery. The battery is fully charged and shows 5 lights when the test button is pressed. I have tried all of these tests with just the battery and with no battery and just AC adapter plugged in.

Any help or suggestions greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
G Wilson

Not good, motherboard may be toast... you are best to send it in to Dell for diagnostic and repairs.

Before sending it in you can try removing the hard drive and battery then try booting on AC.

Try booting with one memory chip installed and then swap them and see if anything happens

I have tried to boot with no battery and no hard drive installed and it's the same result. All indications from this and other forums I've posted to are a bad system board. Thanks for the help.

I'm now in the exact same situation with my M1710, everything u have list is where I'm at as well....even the function and power button boot up sequence.

I contacted Dell and they're sending me the following parts;

1- Bottom cover
> 2- heatsink fan
> 3- mother board
> 4- Thermal pad
> 5- speakers

I contacted them on the 30th of Aug. and was told it would take up to 15 days for the parts to get to me due to the hurricanes.

Just as a heads up, if your laptop has a discrete graphics card (X1400, 7900, etc) that could be the issue. I attempted to upgrade mine to a 7900 I got on ebay and it exhibited the identical symptoms to those you describe (hdd and power light flashes just once and then nothing). When I put my X1400 back all is well again. Video card is WAY cheaper than a motherboard replacement I'm thinking!

My sister laptop is having the exact same problems as you discribed. I tested everything and then decided to take it apart and look for blown parts, CPU, Video, and so on. It turned out to be the Video Card, once you unplug it from the system board, you can power the system on and it stays on. I have found video cards much cheaper then dell support (90 to 100). Once it arrives, I will let you know how it goes.

So on the 18th of September (last Thursday), the Dell technician showed up and changed out the motherboard and the other components I listed out before and the computer still did not work. So Dell is now sending me a new videocard and oddly enough a new LCD screen.

So it would seem that d2tw4all was quite right about the problem being the graphics card. I'll post again once the parts get here and are installed.

My notebook is now working again!!! And to top it off they upgraded my videocard to the 7950 GTX (had the 7900 GTX before.

Dell Insperon E1705

I just had the same problem with my Dell Insperon E1705. I would not boot up. I removed one of the memory cards and it started and is running fine. Thanks for the help!!!

I've been experiencing the same problem. So it looks like removing the memory cards work, but I'm not very tech savvy. Can someone explain to me how to do that please? Thanks!

Service manual can walk you step by step as how to remove a ram module. Pretty much is removing the bottom cover and getting access to the ramslots. Make sure that you remove all power sources from the notebook (battery, ac adapter)

cheers ...
