New hard drive not quite wonderful

I have a Compaq evo n1020v with win xp. I just installed a 160 gb hard drive in the computer - 5400 rpm. The hard drive works pretty well but for one thing. when I listen to dvds now while working on the computer the dvd is affected by what I am doing. Before I could listen to dvds while doing anything on the computer and the sound was almost completely unaffected. Also, copying files from one folder to another seems to be markedly slower than before although boot up times seem to be quite a bit faster. Sounds like some kind of bus issue to me...

I contacted the place where I got the hard drive and, surprise, surprise, they told me to contact the mfg. My experience with mfg of computer products is pretty dismal so I thought I would contact the experts first

What should I do?

. would you expand the "being affeced" issue?

What is PIO mode? and what is disabling indexing?

. PIO, DMA ... mode: under device manager, IDE controller, set to DMA cures lots of slow down issues
. Indexing: windows mechanism to "flag/tag" files for quick find. You can disable this via Windows services or from the properties of the drive in question

cheers ...
