P9500/T9400 vs desktop E6600 @ stock

Hey all.

Gonna drop the hammer on a new laptop soon (looking at the Dell e6400 or perhaps lenovo w500), which will be replacing my current desktop (a Dell XPS 720). My reason for this is I don't need something with so much gaming grunt (do 99% of my gaming on Nintendo DS and PS3), and want something much less lound and power hungry at my desk!

However, I don't want to sacrifice too much in terms of speed of the rest of the rig... so am looking at the moment probably to be ordering with P9500/T9400, 4GB RAM, 7200rpm HDD (will get SSD down the line when get some decently priced ones which don't stutter) and lower-mid range GPU.

However, been out of the benchmark and such game for a while, so want to know how the P9500/T9400 would stack up against my current desktop E6600 (@ 2.4GHz stock)...

Thanks
Stu

well, according to the PassMark CPU Benchmark List, your E6600 (listed as Core 2 6600 on their list) gets a Passmark CPU score of 1383 and the T9300 (the pre-Montevina version of the T9400) scores 1700. It looks like you won't have to worry about a performance drop.

Thanks for that. I was (and am) fairly confident that it is in fact faster, but just wanted that clarification

.... however have to say that I am not sold on that PassMark benchmark, having a look it doesn't seem particularly consistent. For example, the T9500 (at 2.6GHz) scores lower than T9300 (at 2.5GHz), despite them being identical exept for higher clock speed! Can see this on a number of models... I assume may be to do with the other hardware when tested?

(not questioning that the T9400/ P9500 is faster, there is a large margin there... more just the benchmark itself).

I use it because it's the only benchmark or rating I've seen that compares processors from all sectors and generations over the last 4-5 years. That makes it the best tool I know of when comparing processors of different areas (i.e. laptop vs. desktop) and generations.

edit: and I'm sure there are differences in the other system attributes of the systems measured, since they're real-world results and not done in a lab.

Yeah, thought as much. Gives me a good indication though, looks like being an upgrade so am happy with that
