Adding extra heatsink for 4780

As you guys know, our 4780 have room for an extra heat sink but sager decided to cheap out and not put one in...

My 4780 bounce from 50-60 constantly when i am using it that is just idling, with gaming it goes from 60-70.. this is after i've applied AS3.

Anyway, is it possible to buy the 8890's heatsink unit and use it for our 4780?

I have mentioned this in a few posts and have had no luck from anyone so i hit tom at tech support over at sager and also the tech guys from clevo trying to see if something will fit in there. tom said that the design didnt call for the heatsink and fan. but why would they make a spot for it then? im still activly pursuing it and will let you know if i get anywhere.

I don't think its nessecary either, the extended version is used in the 8790 but im not sure if that one would fit. Sager doesn't make the machine understand that, its clevo, and no I don't thing they were being "cheap", they were just making room for upgrade for bigger and faster prosseser at later times.

im sure that it will cut down on the heat. i would rather put the extended heat sink in with the extra fan than have fans underneith the unit!

Well here is my argument

Why have your system bounce up and down between 50C and 60C all day when you can have the fan on constant LOW and it will be around 55 all day?

But as of right now, my 4780 hit 60, then the fan turn on SCREAMING right in the middle of class for like 2 min, then it shuts off, rinse and repeat about 20 times during class and it would be enough to piss anyone off.

Clevo released a bios patch that allow 8790 to control the fan on either constant high or low... i dont see why they wouldnt do the same for this model (4780) but i guess everything else is now the red headed stepchild and wont get any suppose since they'll make more money on the newer models.

Igg,

I think that you mis-state what the BIOS patch for the 8790 does. It allows one to "force" the "SCREAMING" fans to always on or run in normal mode. What you describe appears to the be 4780's normal mode. The inference to a "constant low" does not exist, that I am aware of.

did anyone manage to fit a D870 heatsink in the 4780 or mod in someway such as it will result in a decrease in CPU temperatures?

you can get a 870 heatsink at laptopking.com, someone should try it

8890 has a different heatsink design, more like the 56xx i think

You would also have to find a way to remove the black box filling the 2nd spot as well as a second fan for the spot as well. It's probably not necessary though.

well. after using an air compressor, i managed to remove all the dust from the heatsink and the temperature went down from 70C to 49C so i guess it isn't that important to fit the 2nd heatsink.

Temps and Fan Noise

After a reformat/reinstall (getting the OS nlited and partitioned) and cleaning out the fan openings from the outside (they were caked) the fan shuts off more frequently which is good, and the unit seems happy. After reading a few posts I'm wondering what else could be in there but haven't opened up the unit.

Any pictures of the 4780 that show where a good cleaning might help? Any cooling ideas are appreciated.

Think I'm also running the original bios on my 4780 but don't know if there is a source for anything better.

my fans are always running continuous although when @ 50C i can barely hear them but urs shut off after some time?

Hmmm... I thought it was universally accepted that the noise from these fans is annoyingly loud? If yours are quiet that's great, but mine aren't.

When just browsing or streaming audio the fans are intermittent (that doesn't mix very well at low-mid volume). Anything more intensive and the fans stay mostly on. Also after extended use.

I'd like to clean out the areas this thread refers to but haven't opened up the case and probably won't without some pictures or direction. If it makes sense maybe some thermal grease but I'd like to get heatsink(s) clean and let the air in first. Too bad the early pix aren't linked anymore but there must be others.
