m9700 serious hardware problem (lcd?)

Thread Starter
I have a near terminal problem with my alienware m9700 notebook. A few days ago my notebook would crash when I moved the screen a little. the display would corrupt, the speakers would cycle a buzzing type noise and I would have to hold the power button down to turn the computer off. I could then reboot and the computer would run until I moved the screen again, or something bumped the table and then the screen would corrupt again.

Then the computer would not boot by pressing the power button, I had to apply pressure to the led panel adjacent to the power button, specifically the area around the hard drive light. some lights would come on, including the power light, but the display was dead. sometimes applying more pressure or pressing the power button would get the display to start and the computer to boot. Of course if I moved the screen then computer would crash again.

Now the computer will boot only very rarely, when I hold the screen in strange positions, like laying the computer completly flat, or in a v shape on my lap. the ac adaptor light is on whenever the ac is pluged in.

This leads me to beleive there is a fault with some cable, probably one leading to the lcd.

I have performed a variety of reseating :-

where the lcd cable meets the motherboard
where the inverter board cable meets the motherboard.
where the led panel meets the motherboard, also the power button cable and the led panel cable
I have reseated the ram and the hard drives, and have got the computer to boot with them in their current positions.

there is a crack in my case so that the led panel cannot be securely screwed where it covers the cables leading to the monitor. I have tried manipulating the screen cables with no effect

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Im not sure what you can tell me but dissambling and reassembling my computer is still a work in progress. alas my warrenty is long out of date.

We don't recommend too much disassembly. It is likely that there is a short within the system; possibly metal touching metal when you move or slightly bump the system. This can cause complete shutdowns, lock ups and restarts.

A faulty cable is not out of the question either.

For this, the best solution would be to send it in for repair. Please PM me your information and I can look into your account to help out.

Thanks
