Dell Inspiron Mini finally released! - Page 2

Hey there -

I ordered 9/5 - estimated ship date of Oct 13. Granted, I ordered mine with Linux on it. I spoke with a CR today, and she said all Linux builds have a huge lead time, but that she was confident that Oct. 13 was still the ship date for my build...

Darn it! Why can't it be Oct. 14th already?!

Here's an interesting statistic on Linux:

Return rate on computer with Linux is 3 to 1 over computers with Windows.

http://blogs.zdnet.com/Bott/?p=557

I guess that shows Linux is not ready for the general public yet.

Also, I decided to try something a little more rough on my Mini. I installed World of Warcraft on it. Actually installed it onto the $31 16Gig SD card I just got for it, since the install is about 8 gig alone (ouch!) It actually runs pretty decently. I don't play WoW anymore so it'll most likely get removed soon, and I used one of the freebie public WoW servers to try it. I was amazed at how well it ran. This is on 1024x600 with recommended graphics settings, so I tried it at full tilt and it did take a hit on playability. But on moderate graphics it's quite playable and looks great. Anyway, that was just a neat experiment, not worth anything but a little fun.

I had WoW loaded on the ASUS eee 900. that little guy has awful disk I/O (6 hours to install - patches) but once running, it was working well.

Dell mini still has not shipped

On my m1530 it benches between 1/4 & 1/3 the speed of my 320 7200 drive, MUCH faster than a standard SD. Just hope it runs that fast on the Mini.

It by no means as fast as the SSD in the Mini, but plenty fast enough for me.

I caught the Adobe Acrobat issue on 9/30, called Dell and argued until I got an intelligent Supervisor who realized the situation. He promptly cancelled my order and re-entered my order for an ETA of 10/22. For my troubles, I was given a free webcam upgrade(1.3), free Blueetooth upgrade, free next day shipping and $60 off my order.

U.N.

hmm, interesting. two things stabd out.

1. you got an intelligent supervisor (how? i'v tried twice)

2. you recieved compansation, which I asked for and was told its impossible.

Guess I'm calling India again today...

I agree - I don't think Linux is ready for the general public, but that's because the general public has to yet to figure out the perks of Linux. I also don't think the general public wants to learn a new OS. Windoze has really dulled the minds of most people - in the sense that they are familiar with the OS, so why change? I think Andy Tung from the original interview made a valid point that when they open the box, Linux isn't what their expecting. Oh well.

But, as for myself - I've noticed a significant performance improvement with multiple box configs running various distro's. And for what I want on this lil' guy, I have a feeling that Ubuntu (if that's what I leave on there) will blow me away.

Sorry - not trying to turn the thread to a Linux v. Windows discussion. I'm still patiently waiting for my Mini. (Or not so patiently!)

Cheers!

1. I explained to them that my system was configured wrong and that an impending cancel would eventually happen. I basically said, I'm not getting off the phone until I speak with a Supervisor in knowledge of the issues. His name was Dennis. When I get home later today, I'll see if I still have his direct phone number.

2. The compensation was offered to me for my inconvienence. I made it sound as they were killing my business by delaying my order. Rumor does have it that they were giving compensation to many early orders and stopped due to the shear large amount of errors found due to the acrobat issue.

The Acobat issue is this:
Early on...I believe a large % of orders placed prior to 9/20 were having Adobe Acrobat 9.0 included in the config for the order. The problem is that Dell does not have this software yet. The orders were stalemating then cancelling themselves due to the error. Dell literally didn't know about this system induced error...ergo the hard time to explain to the reps what's going on.
The thread below will explain it all.

Not really, two things about the mini really make this a reality.

1. The Intel GMA 950 scores a 1197 on the 3dmark03. While never a great score, back in 2003 that was more then doable for some games and WoW was released in 2004.

2. We're talking about a MAX graphic resolution of SVGA (lol) 1024x600. That’s the enhanced versions of VGA graphics 800x600 which at this point, just about any GPU can handle basic 3D.

I placed my original order on 9/14.
It was can celled once and now I have to wait til 10/22.
Sounds like it's running almost a month an a half for orders.

I bought a black 160gb (6cell) Aspire One in the meantime....
If the mini arrives and I hate it..... I'll just return it. The hassle is becoming too much.

I canceled mine after the last delay. I'll pick one up with they are readily available for order.

Yay! My Dell Mini arrived today! Well, actually I had to go pick it up because DHL is horrible on customer service.

At any rate - I don't really have any complaints so far. The keyboard takes a little getting used to. The Space bar isn't quite as sensitive as I'd like, but that will just be something I have to get over. As it is, I am already adapting within this post.

The apostrophe key is in a bizarre location, but in today's society, no one uses it as it is. I am running the Linux version of the OS, and for the most part I think Ubuntu and Dell did a great job putting this together. I have streamed audio from a couple of different sources, and it seems to work well enough. It does hang a little bit if I am streaming, and trying to open a different browser or program at the same time, but it quickly recovers. As other posters have indicated, this isn't the keyboard you're going to write a dissertation on, but if you want to jot down some notes, or a quick e-mail, you'll be in good stead.

Overall, very happy, and glad the little booger is finally here!

Though, I may need glasses, cause this text in the quick reply is TINY!

I received mine the other day, I am waiting on my RAM upgrade and for a certain retailer to restock their SSD's.

Definitely going to try getting WoW running on it, that would be amazing.
Does anyone know if it's possible to boot from the SDHC on this card? I'm pretty sure the answer is 'no' since it's not using a USB connection like the EEE pc.

I was thinking if someone knew how to setup GRUB to load the SDHC drivers to boot, then it might be possible.
My order was delayed again to 11/8 even after all the phone calls.
My original order was 9/15!!! it's been 6 weeks and no Mini.
I finally gave up and canceled this afternoon.

That's one strike against Dell for future purchases....in my book.
