wow what a shocker. well hows dell doing business wise? and how are their products
post #4 of 15
actually they are doing very well, still battling it out with hp over who is top of the heap. hp bought voodoo and dell bought alienware so its just all the same really.

product wise both dell and alienware are still very strong.

Those are two quite separate questions. Notebooks with top-end graphics cards such as the Nvidia GeForce 8800M GTX and GeForce 9800M GTX definitely will perform better in games than notebooks with less powerful graphics cards. However, whether the premium required to buy such notebooks is worth it is really up to you. For instance, I'm reviewing a Gateway notebook that has a 9800M GTS video card and costs $1450. It will give you at least 90% of the graphics power of a notebook with an 8800M GTX like the Alienware M15X and costs half the price. But if you really want to be on the bleeding edge of gaming performance and you don't mind the extra money, then getting something like the Alienware M15X might be worth it for you.

im sorry i dont think i was clear on my question
i was trying to ask
if i get a gateway for instance with a 8800m
and if i compare that to an alienware with 8800m (it costs more)
would the alien ware some how be faster? or its just the brand name thats worth its money

the video card is a little bit better in the Alienware and the Alienware comes with a faster processor. That's it.

how so would the alienware have a better graphics card since they are both 8800m?

Nvidia releases different versions of graphics cards. Their highest performance versions, usually called GTX, have all the capabilities of that graphics card "unlocked", whereas the lower versions do not. That's the main difference.

Like others said the 8800m GTX found only in the m15x (for 15" notebooks) will perform much better then the gateways 8800m GTS (about 30% better)

also, you're comparing 15" to 17" notebooks, which is a big deal. on 17" notebooks you should look for SLI if you really want to get some top tier performance.
