First link is to a blog I found where people all over are starting to realize how many of these fail:

I'm tired (just got back from seeing Eagle Eye > rock'n cool movie) but, I think this is the link on the solder repair: http://forums.vr-zone.com/showthread.php?t=23743

Hey Buddy I had the same problem dell exchanged my 1710xps for xps1730

Hi,

I had the same problem with Dell xps1710 similar case like yours.
Got that green vertical lines. I contacted Dell and then they asked me to send the laptop to their repair centre. They did all the Tests and replied me that they are going to send me a XPS1730 in exchange to my Xps1710.
I haven't got my XPS1730 yet, still waiting for nearly 2 weeks anyways.

Has anyone else had any problems with their GeForce go 7 series video cards?

did a clean install of Windows XP and this is what I get...

1. when my laptop boots up the bios screen comes up with a bunch of vertical lines...
2. when windows boots up there is a bunch of vertical lines...
3. simple vga mode works... no vertical lines...
4. when I try to install the drivers for the 7900 GTX I get a BSOD...

Warranty...
So far the video card has been backordered twice... when I get called again
and if its for the same reason I'm going to ask what the next course of action will be...

I doubt there are any remaing Geforce Go 7 series video cards...

what should I do?

Thanks, and I appreciate the help.

Jude,

Was yours still under warranty? I had my first card replaced with just one week of warranty left, it died in just a couple of months and they just replaced it again, last month and now it has died! I can't believe it. Isn't the XPS supposed to be dells best?? Kipp

of course it was under warranty, dell isnt going to do anything for you when your warranty runs out...

the gpu's on the m1710 burn up, this is a known fact, i have had 7 now on mine. you definitely should have extended your warranty, now you are sol. just get a new (or used) 7900 gs and install it yourself, that is about your only option unfortunately.

oh, and the xps m1710 was the most powerful in its day, just because it is the most powerful and best in dell's line, doesn't make it immune to failures, in fact it is probably more prone to problems because they pushed the existing technology as far as possible, that is the side effect of being on the cutting edge

seem like im not the only one...

my dell is DOA because of the green lines of death from the 7900GTX. sadly my warranty ran out just before it fully died, and even though i complained to dell about it running hot and not working 100% before that (which dell said was not an issue with the card) im still SOL according to dell.

sad to see the once great support from dell going so far down these days. no way im paying the 600+ that dell wants for a new card simply to revive a machine which has been problematic to say the least from day one.

Just pay like $200 - $300 for a ebay card.

not one i have seen there for that price, lowest i saw was 480 when i looked. especially hard when i not only need one but need someone who will ship to canada... plus not knowing how long the card will last and ending up potentially in the same situation in a month again doesnt appeal to me.

im more annoyed really at dell not doing anything when i initially complained and then not taking it seriously after it actually died, they waited for the warranty to be up so they wouldnt need to replace it.

anyway, like i said in my other thread, im basically done with dell for good after this incident i certainly dont feel like a valued customer or like they are making a product of exceptional quality at this point.

If you hurry up and check this, $299 on ebay right now, buy it now. Geforce 7950GTX 512MB. $10 shipping.

I believe that the card on ebay is for AW laptops.
It won't fit in m1710.

Hey dudes!

I'm on my second Geforce 7950GTX 512MB of the year (laptop is no londer under warranty) and it has also died. So now I'm thinking about putting a different graphics card in there and trying that.

Has anyone used a different card in their 1710 laptop? I'll be looking for one of equal or better strength to the 7950 card. I
Cheers

7950gtx is the strongest card you can put in a m1710
There are weaker cards that fit such as the 7900gs and more.
afaik they are not more reliable than the 7950, all of them burn/break/stop working for some reason.
if you're gaming and don't mind spending around 400$ buy a new 7950, if you're willing to sacrifice some video performance you could go for the 7900 card, which would cost less (less than 300 bucks i think).

Ok - thank you!

you could also try the FX-3500 which is the same as the 7950GTX just a differnt but inter changable BIOS

Not trying to be a vulture but...

If you end up with an extra (dead) card I might be interested in buying it from you.

Good luck getting what you need man

No I bought a 7900GTX of ebay and it didn't come with a heat sink.

So now I figur the best way to get a heat sink is to buy a dead card with the heat sink attached. May have found one though.

Wish I could fix them...that would be sweet.
