ya, i am beyond disappointed. when where these last produced, 2 years ago? so they are well used, but my god, when i saw this thing, i was shocked, the lid looks like someone used it as a tool try or something, very scratched and dented. smells like cigarettes too. just completely unacceptable...
my computer is immaculate, not a scratch on it, and if it could be repaired it would be perfect.

just don't have a clue what to do now, i cant accept this "replacement", looks like it would be more of of the same run around, i just don't have the energy to keep spending so much time trying to resolve this.

I still can't see my order on the Dell website.

If I haven't heard from them by lunch, I'm going to give them a call.

If we've dealt with the same 'Richard', I got an auto-reply from his office this weekend saying he no longer handles English complaints.

Heureusement, ma plainte pourrait devenir une plainte francaise...

Yeah, OK. My spelling sucks.

So the order for my Crimson Red was canceled. Dell gave me a service tag Monday, but XPS Support now claims that's for the old order with the Smoke Gray. I'm really wondering what the f**k is going on though, because looking up my tag under 'Product Support' shows the unit was shipped yesterday, but the order status still says 'In Production!'

ARRRRGGGGHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

EDIT: Spoke to the guy who worked with me last week...the order was canceled due to some kind of Microsoft upgrade. He's put it back through again. Back to square 1.

i took this thing apart last night to see what may be preventing boot up...

cant believe what problems i found inside...

ok, so the right side speaker is torn out it looks like, at any rate, there is no speaker cone...
weird deep scratches in the optical drive bay...
harry sticky nicotine residue on radiator/heat sink...

no thermal compound on the cpu... i actually added as to it, because that is just frightening... oh, and it is slower than my current cpu... so much for the same or better

more nicotine residue, this thing smells like a bar. had to put it in my trunk because it was stinking up my house, that's just bad

missing rubber things on lcd cover...

bad scratch on the palm rest, and general wear my current laptop doesn't have any of...

just amazing this got out the door at all

oh, and no indication of why it doesn't boot. it just turns on for a sec and then shuts down. i suspect the cpu fried because of heat? don't know, and don't care really because i am sending this pos back!!! dell is on my shit list, never will do business with them, sucks i have 2 more years left on my warranty ...

If you know anything about Warranty Law, you could sue Dell indefinitely for negligence like that...

That's just unacceptable and NOT what you paid for, that's like me paying for a new car and forking out cash for a warranty for it, and when it breaks they give me a junkyard version all smashed up and tell me to live with it.

What is wrong with Dell now-a-days? It used to be so good... I've got two years left on my warranty too, and I'm just praying my XPS doesn't break before then...
Jeez. That is absolutely disgusting.
ya, they wanted to fix it too. they told me it should just need a new motherboard.... i have heard that 20 times now for the one that is supposed to be replaced.... i guess i will get another refurbished replacement.... this is going to be a difficult long process if the replacement i got is any indication of what i need to expect. i was told that this is unusual, it should be in like new condition, and definately the next m1710 will look brand new and work 100%.... sure, sure...

Well I recieved my XPS 1730 it is a sweet looking machine. Red wing flaps, no extra battery, 2 gigs of ram, 8700sli's, 2.4 ghz processer and 120 gig hd. Nice machine but could of been better.....

I like it though

Dell finally shipped my order. Except it's on it's way to some random address in another city! Ugh, will this ever end???

It doesn't seem like they're going to make changing it easy, either.

My laptop has finally arrived. I wound up with the gray version, and I'm almost satisfied.

I'm a bit annoyed that the laptop (and the adapter, holy crap!) are larger than the m1710. I can live with that.

I'm also having trouble with SLI. Either they didn't install the second video card, or there's something I'm not understanding. Windows only shows a single GeForce 8700 in Device Manager.

EDIT: After an hour on the phone with tech support, I have to send the frickin' thing back to the depot to have the video card replaced!

All right. So after another conversation with Dell, I apparently have the video card they intended to give me, which is a single 8700. Trying to object to that didn't get me very far.

However...

After installing and running the games and programs I used on my previous laptop, I'll reluctantly admit that the performance is about the same.

Despite being below my screen resolution, I typically run 1440x900 in my games.

Couple of examples:

Oblivion. Vanilla version runs fantastic on both systems, with max settings. However, once I install my various improvement mods, including a massive texture pack upgrade, some slowing is seen in outdoor scenes. Not much difference, if any, between the two systems.

Half-Life Two: Episode 2: Plenty of outdoor scenes, HDR, etc. High settings, both systems run it very well.

Supreme Commander, Forged Allians: This one gives both systems challenges when everything is maxed. I had to turn down the settings a bit on the old system, more so with lots of units on the screen. Same thing with the new one.

Sooo...yeah. I'm pissed off that I was originally told I was getting dual 8700s and only got one. But given the performance, I find myself unable to stay pissed.

So the only snag now is that they never sent me a waybill or anything for returning my old system. Spoke to somebody last night, who is supposed to be setting one up for me. I'll call back if I don't get it soon.
