Intel Q8300 to arrive as Q6600 retires

The Q6600 has been "the" staple of mainstream pc enthusiasts for well over a year now, with the release of the SLACR revision of the chip. It's well known for it's stability and overclocking abilities.

The Q8300 has some pretty large shoes to fill.

The practically infamous 65nm-built Core 2 Quad Q6600 wasn't pushed aside by the recently-introduced Q8200 but old age will eventually get the best of it in 2009. The first quarter of 2009 will see Q6600 exiting the picture while the Q8200, which should get a price cut in Q4, may just dip below the $200 mark and leave the $224 price point to the new, and not very improved Q8300.

The 45nm Q8300 will be a cut-down Yorkfield with just 4MB of L2 cache, a 1333 MHz FSB and four cores (most likely) set to 2.5 GHz. Keep in mind that, by the time the Q8300 debuts, rival CPU company AMD should already have a few 45nm Phenom X4s released and they'll probably be sub-$250 parts.

And here I was planning on buying a Q6600.... Thinking about a cheap build.

They're still out there - for REAL cheap.
