Ok hello all. 1t post here for a dude who has very little knowledge of laptops. I am looking to purchase a laptop for around 700 bucks. I am looking for any advice I can possibly get. I have seen Dells, Toshiba Satelites and HP dvst? for arund the range I am willing to spend. Can anyone recommend me which to buy and why? I need it for basic usage such as photoshop, excel, downloading. Anyone have any of these brands at my price range? If so, I would appreciate nay input. Thank you all so much

can't help you here, since i owned and worked with all 3 before. They are good established brands. Best bet is to visit a store and let your fingers doing the feeling on them and decide for yourself

Which one of the brands did you find the best/reliable of the 3? What is your preference?

I just got a Toshiba Satellite over the summer. It's great. It cost me $550, plus an extra $30 for a RAM upgrade, and $125 (approx) to upgrade the windows Vista. It has everything you are looking for.

How is the battery life? I hear that is the biggest knock to the Toshiba's. But other than that, I like what I have heard about them
Also, what specs do you have for your satelite?

get whichever has the longest warranty - ONSITE (you dont want to have to ship it away and wait 2-3 weeks for them to get around to getting it back to you
that being said, i dont know of any laptop you can buy retail that has that option. most stores (best buy, compusa) you take it in and they send it off b/c geek squad and firedog are useless. (that or they reformat your harddrive to fix it, and then you have lost all your stuff)
therefore, that pretty much only leaves dell that has onsite warranty
also, most dells have two options for battery. if you want a longer battery life, get the 6 or 9 cell over the 4 or 6 cell (respectively)
and personally i would rather have the larger size even if it does weight more
