Has anyone tried theses new rugged lappys out. A rough and tough Latitude that is Mil spec for Iraq for us in the service. My neighbor already has one in her police car....

But it looks like Dell is trying to give Panasonic Toughbooks a run for their money.

Just courious I have a Toughbook. It is my beater.

3-4k grand for a sealed up lappy. Has CAC card reader and a finger print scanner built in.

OK got home looked over my neighbors laptop mounted in her squad car. It is actually made by Augmentix Corporation and Dell has contracted them out to compete with Panasonic's Toughbook CF-28 Model.

From what I can find Dell has purchased these from Augmentix beings they are Dell Latitudes and rebranded it to XFR D630. Found this so far...

The D630 XFR is not a rebadged system made by Augmentix. The D630 XFR has the same motherboard and keyboard as a regular D630 or D630 ATG. Augmentix I assume provides the upgraded casing for the unit as well as a special docking station that works with it.

I've only worked on one of these systems (shipped with a broken digitizer) and they really are built like tanks. The regular D630 is significantly smaller than my D820, but the XFR is BIGGER than my D820 in almost every dimension. If it weren't a customer's system I would have run it over a few times with the car and my 3/4 ton pickup . The screen also uses a much heavier glass than traditional LCDs giving it added strength. The interior of the unit is sealed from moisture and dust. However, I think they could have done a bit better job on the keyboard. It's just a regular D630 keyboard attached to a tray with a rubber gasket around it.

This is also one of the very few Laptop's with a touchscreen that doesn't convert to a tablet. My guess is the Military wanted that more than anything.

Put a solid state hard drive in this baby and you could probably hurl it against solid objects and not break anything.

Dell has two rugged models.

FXR D360. Mil-Std Version
ATG D630 Rugged version but does not meet Mil Specs.

Then there is the XTG630 from Augmentix. It is the same Latitude D630 base.

Yes, the ATG just has a reinforced casing over the standard D630, plus dust covers for all the ports.

The XTG630 from Augmentix is the same system, but as I said The Dell isn't just a rebadged Augmentix product. The D630 XFR and XTG630 was a cooperative effort between Dell and Augmentix. The XFR has several parts in common with the regular D630 and the D630 ATG.
