N5010 Partition Woes

I recently wiped out my hard drive partitions to reinstall my Windows XP. I used Disk Patch to wipe the drive, so now there are no partitions. The XP Restore Disk that was included with my Laptop does not read, and the I cannot use the the Caldera 7.02 disk because the partitions where the files were stored on the disk have been wiped (Caldera DR-DOS 7.02 only works when if you keep the backup partition intact, because that's where the software "pulls" the image from). Do I need to buy a brand new copy of Windows XP to partition my drive because my restore disk does not read anymore? Please help.

My Current System Specs:
Fujitsu N5010
2GB DDR SODIMM RAM
60 GB Hard Drive
1.44 Floppy Drive
DVD-RW Disc Drive
802.11G Wireless Network Card

*UPDATE* I checked the restore disk that I have for my laptop on another PC, and the files are there, but for some reason my laptop will not read the DVD-ROM (although it reads any CD). I think that something may be wrong with the reader and maybe if I can get the drive to read the DVD-ROM, I may be able to solve my own problem. Any suggestions on getting my DVD-RW drive to work? I'm thinking I might need to play with the BIOS a bit, but I don't really know where to start....

. Try any other installation dvds and see how it reacts?
. try to clean the lenses within the optical drive?

I tried to clean the disk to see if that may be the problem. I was reading up on how you can boot from an EXTERNAL DRIVE (which I have), but don't have an option to in my BIOS to set my PC to boot from a USB drive. My BIOS version is 1.24. Is it outdated? Because I don't see any options.

I have yet personally seen anyone that boots from an USBdrive, from an USB FlashDrive (a good possiblity), but not from an usb hard drive, REGARDLESS of the bios having the option booting from it. This is the constraint of current OS!

Yeah, it's just a taboo it seems, at any rate, I took the faulty DVD drive out already and I cleaned it, but no tomatoes. Does anyone know where to look to replace this drive (or one like it or better)?

NexTag, eBay ...?

eBay is the devil (LOL). I checked Nextag, but a lot of the items were refurbished and to me that's just buying time. Currently Computer Geeks.com has caught my attention as they seem to be the only legit online store with internal DVD writable disc drives for notebooks. I'll let you know how it goes (and if the drive fits).

I also checked Fujitsu's support website and I found a link for a BIOS V1.26 update that does not work....Is this due to the fact that I'm not using my laptop when I click on the link or is it just a bad link?

Well the drive fits perfectly....but the BIOS doesn't recognize the drive when I install it. I reinstalled to old drive and it came up fine. The new drive was manufactured in 2007 and my current BIOS date is something in 2004. I don't think I have the right BIOS updates to run the drive or recognize it. Any suggestions?

My Current BIOS settings for the Secondary Master (The Disc IDE Slot):
Multi Sector Transfers: Disabled
LBA Mode: Disabled
Transfer Mode: Multiword DMA2
Ultra DMA Mode: Mode 2
IDE Controllers: Both (The Hard Disk and the Disc Drive are on).

i wonder if it has anything to do with the master/slave setting on the new optical drive. This would however require a firmware update/upgrade/flash

There was a probelm with the drive itself and I had to upgrade my BIOS to read the drive and reinstall the OS from the disk image. It's done. Thanks for the advice!
